All things to do with photography on a technical side here. Post pictures you want considered opinions on. Ask questions like WTF is a f-stop? That sort of thing. the

Could you explain the phenomenon of reciprocity failure?

I have a photographical question of a very thorny nature and it is this - how do I persuade the good Lady Huxley to let me spend an immodest amount of money on a digital SLR and convince her it was her own idea into the bargain.

And just what the blithering blue blazes IS an f-stop. And all these bloody ISO numbers - they make my whiskers ache.

If I thought these questions were serious I would answer them ;)

I know this one. An f-stop is when you're busy lovin' your significant other and their damned kid starts pounding on the door, whining about how it's late in the morning and they're hungry.

Assuming this one's serious, the f-stop effectively translates to how much light comes through the lens based on how 'open' it is... there's a device that can narrow the 'aperture' which consists of a series of blades within a lens and is often controlled by an aperture ring. This becomes crystal clear if you get someone to take a lens off a camera, look through the lens and turn the aperture ring to watch the blades narrow to a small 'hole' (though many newer SLR lenses don't have aperture rings and are controlled with the camera itself).

And the ISO number effectively relates to what was known as 'film speed' in pre-digital days and is a measurement of how sensitive the sensor is to light. Both of these are important concepts if you shoot much as both frequently affect your final image (I can explain more if you'd like... but will wait to see if the question was serious to start with... )

P.S.: Great idea, Chris (though I'm biased on this one)!

Thanks for the responses, my questions were ofa semi-serious nature. At the mo I've just got a fairly crappy digital camera, though you can manually change the f-stop, ISO and exposure time on it. I'm going to try to get some night sky shots while on holiday next week, so any advice on that would be most appreciated (of course, I'm going to be in the Lake District, so there's a 0.00000001% chance of there being a clear sky..)

Ah, my dearest CJ, it is, I believe, a Canon a80 Powershot. 5 years old, purchased to take on honeymoon with the good Lady Huxley. (No sniggering at the back!)

CJ, since I doubt I will upgrade to dSLR (to have to learn to use properly), what would be your opinion on the Canon SX10IS--the one with the 'super zoom'...??

Oh, and can you come out this way and teach me how to use it to its full potential? I've read books now, and know a bunch in theory... but doing is quite different...!!! :banghead:

Red eye ,well to be honest green eye cos it's mostly on dog pictures .There are lots of programs to remove red-eye from pics but they don't work on green-eye ,If I could use a negative image would they work? then I could take a negative of that image ,
and fill in the white pupils with black which is a much easier selection .?

or am I being insane and should practice more retouching ?
