Name this plane
Re: Name this plane
They were carried under 'Betty' bombers until they were within range. The USN recognized the serious threat and widened their defensive perimeter. Since Betties were notoriously slow, medium altitude, bombers, not to mention tinder boxes, the strategy worked extremely well for the USN.
Funny that none of the axis countries ever developed a good high altitude bomber. :\

A strategic bomber force requires a lot of resources to build and operate. None of the axis countries had sufficient resources for something like that. That's one of the reasons why they went to war.Făkünamę wrote:They were carried under 'Betty' bombers until they were within range. Yes, but it is a very big step from Logie Baird's work to a bomb mounted TV camera with screen for the bombardier! Amazing! I had no idea.Calilasseia wrote:They've never heard of John Logie Baird? Who first rolled out a prototype television system in 1926, and built a working system for the BBC by 1932?Gawdzilla Sama wrote:It often surprises people to learn that TV was demonstrated before WWII. Possibly a Henschel HS 293, which used a similar guidance system, namely a small television camera in the nose, and a radio set receiving control inputs from a bomber crew member using a joystick to steer the missile. The operator sat in front of a small television receiver to view what the missile saw.

Meh, the lack of hydrocarbons caused some production difficulties, but that was overcome by converting rice to fuel for certain parts of the overall item. And later they managed to switch the whole of their society to this system.klr wrote:Not very environmentally friendly.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:Single-use Organic Processing Control Module.klr wrote:A disposable organic unit at that.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:The Okha bomb was controlled by an Organic Processing Unit.

True. But they had abundant resources early-mid war to develop such technology.klr wrote:A strategic bomber force requires a lot of resources to build and operate. I don't understand the myopic-ness of their strategy.
