Glad you're enjoying it. Thanks for the idea, btw. I feel like I have my own place to play, without bothering anybody else. 8-)
So there I was, surrounded...by other monks. I was just an ordinary American, tobacco-chewing redneck from Mississippi Thai forest monk.

I was 33, making me an old fart now. Still, it beats the alternative.

Does the lack of other westerners ever get to you? It must have taken a bit of getting used to since it's such a huge difference from the red neck South!
We have no great war, no great depression.
Our great war is a spiritual war.
Our great depression is our lives.

Done. Many times over. Nana Plaza. And Chiang Mai. And Phuket. And Hat Yai. And Pattaya...and further East, Saigon, Nha Trang and Danang. Those are the ones I remember. We are talking about holding hands and taking pictures, right? :shifty:

The lack of Westerners doesn't bother me at all. There are a few other crackers ( ;) ) who work here, and I have a few Western friends I can see when I want, but now I just see people as people. Race doesn't occur to me so much anymore, and the language/culture thing is routine now. I've also figured out how to get chewing tobacco over here, so I'm still in touch with my inner redneck.

You know the stereotype of the inscrutable Asian? It came from the fact that they're taught that displaying strong emotions is a sign that you can't control yourself, and thus shows bad character. (This has sources both in Confucianism and Buddhism.) So is responding too quickly (in polite conversation) or expecting a quick answer.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I didn't go that route. I'm not the type to jump the curb and take the dirt road...NTTAWWT... :ddpan:

In Thailand hand-holding is a same-sex thing. "Co-ed" hand-holding is frowned on. :whisper:

OH. Yeah, it's the same way here. I thought you were going in another direction there. Yeah, I got a real shock one night my first year here. After dinner with the Hapkido master and his wife one night, we're walking down the sidewalk back to the gym and he suddenly reaches over and grabs my hand. In a panic, thoughts of 'Danger!' raced through my mind. In a split second, all of the following thoughts occurred to me: I first thought somebody was about to jump us from the alleyway we were passing, but nope. Then I thought maybe a motorcycle was coming down the sidewalk (anyone reading this and doesn't know, motorcycles and scooters drive on the sidewalk here) from behind us and about to run us over, but nope. Then I thought maybe I was about to step into an open manhole in the dark, but nope. It slowly dawned on me that he just wanted to hold my hand. 'Fuck! Fuck! FUCK!' I actually broke into a sweat. 'What the fuck?! He's not gay! That's his wife, for chrissakes!' Anyway, I eventually got over it. It's a little weird, but wtf. It's their culture. When I was a young boy, put our arms around each others' shoulders. They just don't grow out of it. They call it 'skinship' over here, btw.
