It's easy to think that he must be being intentionally manipulative and dishonest in order to spout such garbage. But I think it's also entirely possible that he has no idea, and that he has simply learned, without being aware of it, how to engage with such people and in such ways that the reactions he gets make him feel better about himself, and protect him in his own little bubble. There could also be some level of cognitive dissonance where he does sometimes know he's lying, leaving him with secret feelings of guilt and shame, which he then has to push away by shrinking further into his comfort zone of fairy tales.
But it does make me wonder to what extent we all might do such things, and what checks and balances can be used to make sure our own world-view doesn't get too heavily warped.
