Asexuality?
Don't know much about this asexuality but was wondering if any of the biology geeks know if this is a real heritable condition?

Could be like the gay gene idea and just pass on with later kids or something? Could be the faulty genetic mechanism is a toggle and some offspring are hypersexed to compensate?andrewclunn wrote:And just how would one inherit it? Seems fairly self defeating. Wait... Damn those Puritans!!!

Re: Asexuality?
Truly asexual females, given certain social motivations and pressures, could just lie back and think of England, and so could reproduce quite successfully.
Truly asexual males, on the other hand, would presumably not be passing on their genes...
(I use the word "truly" to remove the category of people temporarily not feeling sexual, for whatever reason...)

Re: Asexuality?
Far too simplistic, - excluding people 'temporarily not feeling sexual', still leaves a vast multidimensional spectrum from sexual to asexual. The definition that's been settled on for asexuality is about sexual attraction. It doesn't mean there can't be any physical arousal, sex drive, or desire for romantic intimacy, - which are all distinctly different. So assuming each of these things has a simple single-gene genetic cause (which is probably quite a silly assumption anyway), there's no reason each of them couldn't be passed on separately.JimC wrote:Truly asexual females, given certain social motivations and pressures, could just lie back and think of England, and so could reproduce quite successfully.

I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain

Yeah... she's long gone from here, anyhow (more's the pity, as I like her).
