I'm posting this not as a disgruntled ex-RDFer (I was a member but more a lurker than anything) but as someone who thinks that the "official" line of this incident should not go unchallenged.
It's clear that, at the moment at least, Prof Dawkins and the Foundation consider/ed the forum to be an aside, and of little importance or relevance, given the tone of his response, and the various phrases used to belittle the individuals and concerns expressed by former members. By extension, the value placed by Dawkins / the Foundation on the apparently ephemeral data on the internet would appear to be low. While people here are comparing it to the burning of the Library in Alexandria, RD's own term for it was "something so small" (title of the book perhaps, with a question mark at the end).
Can I suggest that, for want of a means to vent accurately, noticeably and with the facts, that a book is written? Something short and concise, like "Letter to a Christian Nation", that need only have a short print run. The book would detail the history of the forum and its community; the events (if any can be recalled) of the previous changes; the full recorded details of events this week, and perhaps prior to all that, showcase some of the relationships, stories, deconversions, and other wonderful aspects of the community that came out of it.
Yes, towards the end, it would undoubtedly be very specific, but where blogs and forums will more than likely eventually be deleted, a book can sit on a library shelf for hundreds of years. It would likely also be taken more seriously by anyone cataloguing events in the future than "whinging on the internet", and would be an unavoidable, and uncorruptable "official" statement from former members (i.e. can't be quote mined by RD's minders).
Keep it factual, free from swearing, free from typos, and free from overtly emotional statements (or cleverly condescending obtuseness, for all that that can be amusing) and you'd have a permanent chapter - and possibly closure.
(Once again, here's a copy of the deleted "complaints" thread from RDF - pages 7-20 anyway - keep scrolling down, and don't try the links! I believe it reached 28 pages.)
