Toward a New Foundation

Post by DanDare » Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:14 pm

I don't buy that money was the problem with the forum. The foundation has hundreds of thousands of dollars, much of which we gave them.

So, who is up for designing a new Global Foundation of Reason and Science, with many rationalist figureheads instead of just one?

I'm a bit fuzzy on it right now (its 5am and I have been up all night dealing with this). But there are things we can do. We could make a forum self funding. To give you an idea of what's possible I invite you to look at fraxionpayments.com, which is a business I have just formed to allow micropayments to be made at Wordpress blogs. I bet with a few months work I could extend the idea to unlocking forum threads for only a few cents per person, making the forum at least self funding.

There is more that would have to be done to go from a forum to a full blown foundation but I believe its the forum community that has to be the core of any such enterprise.

My wife is going to be really pissed off I stayed up all night. I think I better bugger of and get some sleep. (I keep saying that but this disaster keeps bulling be back to the screen to read more).
The new forum, a pheonix indeed, is at http://www.rationalskepticism.org. Ex RDF guys, that is home for those that want it.

ostensibly the same as RDF. It is a worthy cause but I think it just shot itself in the head.

It already exists. It's called The Reason Project.

We could perhaps affiliate with them in some way? :dono:
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.
Prithee, nuncle, keep a schoolmaster that can teach
thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

The community there doesn't function so well. The forum software they use is brain dead by comparison to this one. And again its a kind of one man show.

Separate but affiliated though? Could that work? They could link their members here for general chat/discussion, rationalia could send people to them for more organised action etc. Outsourcing could be the way forward!

Maybe it is, but tbh I never really understood what the cause was there, either.

Promotion of Richard Dawkins? Just a guess.

Nah, I never donated funds for that. The aims of the foundation where to promote science and reason world wide.

That sounds quite nebulous.

Without someone like Richard, or indeed Sam a "New Foundation" wouldn't really fly.
PR is everything, unfortunately, and as for affiliating, you must ask yourself, what's in it for "them" besides some extra members?

20 GOTO 10
