It would be nice if Richard Dawkins were the public face of atheism. He's not. The public face of atheism is Josef Stalin. Or Mao Dse Dong. Or Pol Pot.

Drove through Birnam the other day. Possibly the one whose wood did walk to Dunsinane.

Does anyone here actually go there much any more?

I've just been pottering around the site and I noticed that there haven't been any new "discussion" threads by members, published by the moderators, since the 15th - well over a week ago. I'm not sure if the moderators are on holiday and not publishing anything, or if nothing new is being submitted.

There have been various other threads posted, averaging about 5 a day, but they're mostly just links to vaguely related news stories, youtube videos or blogs.

I'm not quite sure what the point of that place is any more.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

I check in somewhat regularly - for a mixture of catching the odd article, stalking Richard, and enjoying the schadenfreude of how crap it has become overall.

They're clearly going for quality over quantity. Clearly. :coffee:

At least nobody's talking dirty in there.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Net is best considered analogous to communication with disincarnate intelligences. As any neophyte would tell you. Do not invoke that which you have no facility to banish.

Ahem - I just noticed something curious at the foot of RD.net. It reads:
Richarddawkins.net is owned and managed by The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science (US). US IRS Tax ID (EIN) #98-0499347
Tax ID? Can someone from the US (looking at Coito, here) tell me - does this mean that the US branch of RDFRS has lost or relinquished their tax exempt status?

Curiouser and curiouser… :tea:

Edit: There seems to be a function on the IRS site for checking this sort of thing, but it's not very user-friendly, and doesn't appear to be working on my iPhone browser: http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0, ... 67,00.html

Hold your Schadenfreude. "A Federal Tax Identification Number or your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a 9 digit number assigned to you in order to identify your business tax accounts if you employ others. The IRS uses the EIN to determine which business tax returns you are supposed to file. EINs are used by a variety of people including: employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, non-profit associations and trusts." http://www.ehow.com/how_5743732_lookup- ... source=ask

Exactly ^^

It's a business accounting designation, not anything nefarious.

Yeah - but Seraph - a non-profit organisation is not the same thing as a tax-exempt organisation. There are plenty of non-profits that pay tax. RDFRS is/was not one of them. And I'm sure that what used to be at the foot of the page was a note of their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Does anyone know how I might access a web cache to see this? :tea:
