Have you guys seen the announcement Richard made? It is now clear why such drastic actions were taken. I just want to personally thank the people who ruined it for the rest of us by sending Richard (and I'm guessing Josh, too) some nasty emails reminiscent of the ones Richard read aloud in The Genius of Charles Darwin. You know who you are. And after seeing some of the nasty names you called Josh here, it is now clear that many of you are not capable of talking about this in a reasonable manner.

Look, I don't agree with the changes being made. But the drastic actions being taken are a result of immature vitriol, it seems. I imagine that, had this not happened, we could have had some normal discussion on the forum on our thoughts about the changes being made. Instead, a select few ruined it for us.

Thank you, whoever you are, for making it come to this.

That's right blame the victims.

Those quotes were posts made here, well after the forum was shut down and the deleting of any dissent. And it's out of context.

That's right, RD is making posts quote-mining other people.

Read this thread. See the quote mines in Dawkins' post. Surf the real time-line. Realize that all the drama was caused by Dawkins being stupid enough to send a boy to do a mans job. If he'd have thought it through, the drama wouldn't have happened.

I can see from your avatar that you are a big fan of Richard's. Well, we all were. The difference is, we can recognise when people have changed.

Even if you completely support the new changes, you must still recognise the staff have been treated terrible, accounts have been deleted and thousands of posts have been removed. That deserves an answer. Instead, Richard completely deflected the issue by choosing to deal with a few nasty comments about Josh. Considering how Josh treated us, I think those comments were somewhat understandable (but they still went too far).

Hugh, wasn't it you who authored the nice quote Julie had in her signature? Just curious, I'm not suggesting anything. If it was you, anyway, clearly nothing needs suggesting.

I am flabbergasted against the seat at all of this. :ddpan:

With all due respect, I think you have misconstrued the time lines Julie.

Why not a single mention by the good doctor of thanks to the staff?

Having just read Dawkins new post myself, the only new post on his own web site for quite a while now, I am frankly disappointed in someone I used to respect. At least there is now a sign up on the opening page, of sorts. Not to say that the forum is closed or explain what he intends to do with it, only to claim he/Josh are being persecuted all over the web. He must be so used to the more vitriolic comments of believers by now and yet he has to go looking for disgruntled atheists and use their comments is all he can think of doing, pathetic.

Not a sign of reconciliation or understanding from him, only his attempted justification for the discourtesy and disrespect shown to those mods that also used to respect him too. Not a sign of gratitude for all the help of that excellent former moderating staff, just slurs by association amounting to more insult. Grrrr such arrogance. :Erasb:

I have more than a few times defended Dawkins against friends' claims of his arrogance. I wonder if I was wrong.....

Julie

every single quote came from here.

After Josh:

a) Removed PM Functionality
b) Deleted tens of thousands of science posts
c) removed signatures that attempted to give people another place to meet
d) Locked the forums and turned off search completely to make it nigh impossible to archive any content.
e) specifically forbade mods from helping people to arrange to go to a new forum
f) redirected archival programs to a Rick-roll

You can't even go and look at the very restrained actual thread on the forums about this, because they have deleted it completely.

What was written wasn't particularly nice, but it was a small sample of the thousands of posts here.

RD did exactly what the creationists do, quote mine and mis-represent to actual views of a body of people to make them seem to be right and the other side to be demons.

One of the quoted comments is mine, the one about the dead rhino. It was made here, on this site, after RDF was shut down. It was on a thread mocking Josh, not RD, which was readily apparent if anyone had actually read the thread. ALL the quotes came from this site, and ALL were posted after RDF shut down. The "drastic actions" were taken prior to any of the postings that he is deliberately quote-mining. It's dishonest, disingenuous and cheap. It's the tactics employed by the creationists and IDers that RD despises. I don't care if Josh did the quote mining and went trotting over to RD with them, saying "look what they're calling you now, sir". He should have checked his sources before posting this dreck.

The shut down of the website was a fiat accompli before anyone from RDF jumped in the life boats and washed up on ratz shores. Check out Peter Harrisons blog for a look at what actually happened.

Are you kidding me? I know you have backed him all the way, but it was you who was looking for Richard to land the blame on someone else. Now we know that he was entirely complicit, or at the very least doesn't care, you are turning on us?

Those posts were taken from here, from people you have been posting with every day on RDF. Those aren't anonymous, faceless entities he is slagging off, it's us.

(I am another who has spent a long time defending Dawkins. Last year I felt a little bit of the sting of being on the wrong side of him, now I've felt it fully. I can see why people shut the book on their opinions of him. I feel I have to add, now I am not so naive as to how things are to be handled, that I don't hate him, I don't hate anyone because of internet stuff.)
