I judge them by a variety of criteria. Richard may have completely stuffed up that area, but his books and his forthright stand on matters of religion are things I value...
Aye, agree. His work is valuable.

Something just came to mind ... OBC ran a competition back at RDF way back when ... the last person to post in the competition thread by a certain time would win ... I did, and I won ... I won Richard Dawkins' Growing Up In The Universe dvd. I had read a few of his books, participated on his front page and forum, and watched him on Youtube, etc ... If you want to know why RD got the Charles Simonyi Professorship in the Public Understanding of Science, that dvd might provide evidence. ;)

I remember that thread - magic times!

EDIT: And to think all those kinds of threads got "purged", even long before the forum imploded :sigh:

No. Just the one - with the sockpuppet remark. I know that a couple were Chalkers (he's been in correspondence with me), but haven't a clue about the rest.
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.

thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

Yeah. I suppose he's getting a taste of his own medicine on that count. :hehe:

Having said that, I did say to him - he admitted to what he did at the time of forumgate, admitted that he wasn't competent enough to deal with the situation he was landed in at that time, and apologised, more meaningfully and sincerely than Richard had done on his behalf. And more than Josh is ever likely to offer (no matter how high Andrew's opinion of Josh is). I respect that, at least. And from what I can tell he's been similarly upfront with me via email.

Oh the pic with comment 9 (helena) is TOO delicious! Combined with the text of the comment, I almost sprayed good Midvinter ale on my trusty laptop. :{D

I really hate that BS line 'Our number one/best/strongest/etc. resource is you!'
Anyway, the first sentence made me laugh. It almost sounds religious.
Isn't it also, like, terminally out of date?

I might have believed that claim in 2009. Nowadays, it feels like false advertising.

Iz funny, people like you, who were deeply involved in the thing seem to have moved on quite well, while I'm still horribly miffed at what happened (especially since the successor forums were a rather unqualified failure and I've essentially lost any contacts I used to have within the former RDF community, it being understood that to my knowledge, the Ratzian I had most contact with there was Gallstones, and that was because she modded me to my displeasure)

12 out of the 25 comments so far have been removed by a moderator. Long live diversity of opinion. That site is a beacon of atheist tolerance.

Ah, God be with the days when the removal of one comment or post out of thousands would cause a righteous furore. :mob:

Did you... alter him? :?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
