Announcement about RDF

I've just dragged what I have of the "Death of the Forum" thread out of my browser's cache (pain in the arse database cache)... and merged it into one file (with the Announcement at the top).

It'll be here briefly - if it's worth keeping, I'd invite a Ratz Admin to take a copy and put it on the Ratz server.

Still no sign of Cali, who hasn't logged on since 7:44 yesterday am. I hoping he doesn't do anything precipitous, as it would be better if we got the forum archived first, since I know he doesn't have all his content saved offline, only the big recent posts. I'm about to go save all the boilerplate posts now, just in case something goes wrong with the autoarchives (at least three peole I know of are attempting an autoarchive).

On the contrary, hack, I think Cali saves all of his posts offline! Still, I'll try to save as much as I can!

No, I know he hasn't always done so, and I know he has not got all of them saved, based on private conversations we had where I was looking for particular material for the boilerplate and being defeated by the search.

One a side note:

We had intended to leave the forum fully-funtioning for 30 days, but due to the inappropriate posts by some users and moderators, we have decided to leave the forum in a read-only state.

A thread was started in the tech forum concerning the announcement, and people were obviously unhappy and vented a bit. TBH, I think it was just an excuse.

I just logged on there, picked up a pm and sent one back.

It is my feeling that this was bound to happen after the purge of autumn 2008. I also believe that RD knows exactly what is going on and that actually, he wants rid of the forum altogether, that it is too big a monkey on his back. Let's be honest, he's not a man of the people (I'm with Mrs CJ on this one) and some of us are just not the right kind of person; intellectual snobbery always existed on the site from some parties, which is why Dawks came into being.

It's just a shame nobody there had the balls to come clean about it nor the manners to deal with people in a civilised way.

I think it comes down to 2 main things:

* not really knowing how to fix the forum problems (something to do with the backend) although I've been told by others that it could have been done
* not being willing to spend any more money on it to patch it up (which is always a useless solution anyway)

I don't think RD wanted to get rid of the forum at all but he'd take advice (as would the Foundation) from the tech people. If they said it can't be fixed and is draining the resources then they are going to approve the new system that's presented to them.

That's my hunch anyway.

Gallstones was posting a picture of someone giving the middle finger, other mod's supported his views. Rest of us vented our displeasure at the situation. Nothing that wasn't to be expected after being told we were being fucked.

Well, that and CJ and me telling the fuckers that we hope that this will hurt their chances with future employers, as well as some rather outspoken criticism by pretty much everyone.

Is there any way to restore deleted posts? Some kind of internal archive, or journaling function?

I just tried a quick search using Google focusing on users who apparently have had their accounts deleted. By clicking on the "Cached" link I was able to view some of their deleted posts. I don't know how exhaustive the caching is.

I don't know. I'm going to give it some thought and, of course, much will depend on how successful we are in archiving the content.
