While having a look for this Battyboy, I somehow wound up at this old thread - http://www.rationalskepticism.org/gener ... 31124.html - which is a classic example of the annoying trolling we had to put up with from Rainbow over there for years (and at rd.net before that). It was good to see it again and remind myself of what he was like, as I was starting to question whether he was ever actually like that. Over here he's mostly a constructive poster who can answer questions and post thoughts in more than single or few word phrases.

Anyway, what was really interesting about that, was that the mods back then had no trouble giving a warning for trolling. There really is no need to let trolls get away with their shit until the point that everyone gets so pissed off that the mods need to wield the perma-ban hammer. Rainbow was an interesting case, as he wasn't a troll all the time. It was only when he got in these idiotic belligerent moods that he became one. A series of suspensions for trolling might have made him see the error of his ways and encouraged him to stop doing it. But instead he was banned outright and they lost a potentially interesting member.

I actually don't think he was trolling there at all. I thought it was quite a funny way to show the problems with the claims people were making but the members seemed to miss it as they were too busy trying to insult him or assign claims to him that he hadn't made. It didn't seem like his intention was to inflame but to genuinely make a point (although there was a level of implied snark where he used arguments people relied on against them, e.g. "I simply refrain from taking a position on that claim").

It seems like the problem people had with him there was that they didn't feel like he was giving appropriate weight to their comments, like when asked if he could quote someone saying something and he replies "Yes" - but that's obviously not trolling. He's under no obligation to do that work for them.

LOL, of course he was trolling. He avoided answering questions by pretending he didn't know what the question was people were asking. He gave nonsensical answers to the questions he did answer, and the single or few word posts are a clear sign of someone not willing to engage honestly. Taken together, that's clearly trolling.

I think what happens with rainbow, and it happens to all of us at times to varying degrees, is that he often found himself being belligerent in the face of mass opposition. The same thing used to happen to SD and Hugin*. But at least with those two, they faced massive opposition almost constantly. Rainbow seemed to have an easy trigger to get narky that people were opposing him.

*Hugin of course turned into a mega troll, and was mercifully shown the door eventually.

I was one of the biggest new atheist out there but now I have seen how easy new atheist swallow cultural Marxism and feminism I'm beginning to believe that atheists and Christians need to work together to avoid a collapse of civilization. For someone who has been banned from ratskep for having a different opinion from the horde, you sure do like to defend them when someone of a different political stance calls into question their moderation policies. You are showing yourself to be nothing but an ideologue who will support anybody who agrees with your political position. In case you need reminding this isn't very skeptical, intelligent or using free thought. You can choose to be religious or an ideologue or a rationalist but if you don't choose the later then you are no better than any you insult.
