Shit! I was just making some notes along the same lines but you got in first - and yours looks much better! :td:

Initially, I was thinking that after RDF, there is nowhere to go for the, er, earnest theists to, er, lead us atheists onto the path of righteousness. :D RDF was indeed a magnet for them. (I do miss the 'chew-toys'). (It would be difficult to approach that level of popularity without 'Richard Dawkins' on the title page.) To this end I made a list of various religions (as you have) but so that they could be used as 'safe havens' away from atheist commentary and ridicule within their own section.
No distinction is to be made within each group with regard to denomination or a sub-belief: Baptist can discuss with Catholic, Shi’ite can discuss with Sunni, etc.
Limited proselytising will be allowed but only within each religious group. Cross- proselytising between groups is not allowed.
An Open Religious Discussion section, as it name implies, is reserved for those of different religious persuasions to explore each other’s beliefs. There will be no proselytising in the this section. Non-believers will not be allowed to challenge belief within the believers’ dedicated sections. Thus making them feel 'safe'.
At the moment I see many religious forums specialising in there own grouping: Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, etc. and perhaps, having them put in the same boat, may allow the 'undecided' in those groups to begin to see how ridiculous these beliefs are. (Wishful thinking, perhaps.)

There will always be the curious and the 'evangelical' type who will wander into the Rational Thinking section to try and put us right and without their input we might just as well talk amongst ourselves. 'Preach to the converted', you might say.

It is possible that the name of the proposed site - 'rationalskepticism' - might deter some of the religious because it is so obviously an atheist site.
I had thought of 'Alternative RDF' or 'ARDF' where if anyone (you know who) objects, 'RDF' means: Rational Discussion Forum.

This is just off the top of my head this morning - and it's probably a load of rubbish. :td:

I've been poking around I do like this place.

But I will inevitably miss the Christers and wooers. Should we get a new community with our own forum, we probably ought to name it something provocative so as to attract their attention.

My preliminary ideas are...

Feel free to add to the list.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

If this is someplace you'd like to promote as a new home for some, may I suggest you make a new thread on it and ask a staffperson to sticky it for you? Otherwise it will get lost in the tidal wave of posts...

Or the same for any other sites of the same sort - maybe a dedicated thread is needed for y'all to discuss different places and options, to keep it all centralised.

Write a book containing an in-depth slagging off of every major religion, and a comprehensive de-bunking of every woo-based and supernatural idea and a selection of thorough refutations of the most common (and bizarre) Creationist canards.

Should bring 'chew-toys' running.

Gradual change!
When do we want it?
In due course!

Or alternatively :

Build a forum containing an in-depth slagging off of every major religion, and a comprehensive de-bunking of every woo-based and supernatural idea and a selection of thorough refutations of the most common (and bizarre) Creationist canards.

Then raze the whole thing to the floor in a fit of pique.

Should have the 'Chew toys' laughing in the Aisles of church for years.

As much as I don't like to admit it that post to us definately had a snarky air of RD about it.

He wrote it for sure, whether he was aware of all the facts is another matter, whether he gives a shit about the facts I think is the most significant matter, as he doesn't.

He's rid of the monkey on his back now, hooray for him.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Meh? got any idea who would host a community even half as large as RDF used to be, and with the kind of high volume traffic and large posts (including the big articles etc)?
and how in heck would we finance it? atheist forums make good money with ad banners?

We'll never get that volume no matter where we go. A few hundred at most is all we could hope for.

Oh I agree... it sounds like his style of writing. I meant that perhaps the insults were found and presented to him in a little 'oh look what they did to me' package.

I've said it before... I think the issue is over for him. :?
I think - therefore I am atheist
