Re: Announcement about RDF Part 2.
What the fuck has happened over there?!?!
I'm just now catching up on all this. First I thought it was just the RDF servers being overloaded again and coughing up dead-end pages. Then I thought it was my computer.
I only wish it had been.
Now I see what has been going on.
This really sucks. Such a loss. And so unnecessary. I hope Richard hears what really went on.

I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

- from the RDF websiteUPDATE 1/1/10:
As far as we can tell (there may be one or two odds and ends to tidy up) the totals are as follows:
Donations not including matching: $99,569.25
Total, including matching: $164,130
If any last minute adjustments need to be made when we look in more detail, we'll announce it here.
Um. That's a lot of cash

Re: Announcement about RDF Part 2.
Jesus, that last "announcement" is the biggest pile of crap yet. Josh et al need to hire themselves a competent spinmaster. Either that or teach a goldfish to type. If they thought they were justified (and they weren't) in trying to silence the staff they'd just fired, they could have just banned them, no reason to delete the entire posting history of anybody. And if they didn't mind members talking about where to go next, why did they get rid of signatures and avatars when people started using them to put up this url?
Josh is lying through his teeth.
And what's this shite about not wanting to be a social networking site? How many times did Dawkins comment on how hard it was to get atheists together in a community? I know he said he found value in the forums at least once, as somebody around here already pointed out.
We need a clear statement from Dawkins so we know how involved he was in this, including this latest spate of lies.

Re: Announcement about RDF Part 2.
It just occurred to me that this kind of puts Richard in a tough spot (assuming, of course, that he didn't know about nor approve this).
If he stays silent, he'll have lost the respect of a lot of people. (Plus, we would never know if he was aware of this or not.) If he makes a statement, what would he say? The creationists will have a field day with this.
The best thing for him to do would be to be totally up-front and disassociate himself from the actions of his team. And publicly rebuke or fire them.
Any word from Richard?

Thanks, virphen (and for the popcorn, too!). I've been a member here for a while, but I've not been very active. Somehow I suspect that will change now.virphen wrote:Really pleased you could make it here.... have someorpheus wrote:What the fuck has happened over there?!?!

Re: Announcement about RDF Part 2.
Someone just posted a rebuke of Timonen - and a promise to no longer donate to Dawkins' foundation - on the comments under a front page article. Wonder how long it will last? I screen-capped it in case it's removed for being "unhelpful."

They've removed the link to the forum on the front page.

Maybe it was just a glitch. It does seem to be there now. But I took a screen-shot of it before - here's what I saw just a few moments ago:Valden wrote:I still see it, and it works too.orpheus wrote:They've removed the link to the forum on the front page.

The guy is a tosser.Flora wrote:It seems that from the latest admin announcement, staff have been blamed for the shut down of the forum because we (Mazille and I) posted the letter to the staff publicly. The contents of the letter explained what was going to happen to staff and what we shouldn't do. There was no personal or confidential information in that letter. It was exactly the same as the one to members but with the addition of telling staff that the plan to include them in developing the new area wasn't happening and that their services wouldn't be required on the new website. There were also clear directives about what staff shouldn't do. I think it should have been left up there with the other one as they do go together but perhaps they didn't want the membership to know what they'd said to staff.
I mean, even if we had done unspeakable illegal things which caused the shut down of the forum then why deny PMing access to the whole forum? Ban the "naughty mods" (if they had broken some sacred laws as he's asserting here) and let everyone sort out their business.
He simply wanted to treat people like shit, blame others for his incompetency and then try to prevent a mass exodus that was inevitable given the way he handled the whole thing.
