fred, only a very few, and that only when they are feeling a little cranky... ;)

It has not been easy for a small forum to adapt to such changes, the hominid tribal metality being what it is. But mostly, we have tried, and mostly, it has worked...

(and mostly, after a period of venting, you incomers have been as polite and courteous as one could wish... )

 Hi Paco. I can drink to that! :td:
I disagree with most of what Elessarina says. Infact lots of it is contradictory. For example (adlibbing) 'it's just a forum, not real life" contradicted by; "I don't want to be associated with the insults you write here". Or; "get over it" contrasted with "oooh, I'm so upset by the new wave" Etc. Well, you get over it, then.
Yes Elessarina, you had a cosy community...and it may return to be small & cozy, and non-consequential. But what use is a small cosy community of atheists/agnostics who are so non-confrontational, so laid-back, and so inoffensive, that no one notices them, and if/when they do, they simply flick them off as being no threat to the status quo?
Indeed, Elessarina implied that it is no good to be noticed, it's better to be anonymous & insignificant. that she/he is tired of being told that the OP is wrong. Well, in the gist of your own words "get over it". "It's not real, its just the internet".
Galaxian was attacked more than anyone on RDF. Attacked personally with ad-homs. Told I was a terrorist murdering SOB, etc. Water off a duck's back Elessarina. The insults that Richard cherry-picked, probably with the help of others, were merely colorful language. I've been called far worse MANY times in the town center, and threatened with a knife at my throat several times... Water off a duck's back Elessarina, water off a duck's back.
Sorry, but we have a job to do. I love the forum atmosphere, but I also realize that there are dragons to be slain. there's no reason, as Paco says, that the two be incompatible. Got to go now...there's dragon work to do! :mob:

I wasn't really talking about the serious side of RDF when I made that post, I was referring to the large membership that retained a community feel. I've no desire to see this particular site become the powerhouse resource that RDF was but that doesn't mean that serious discussion isn't welcome. You ask what purpose a site with atheists/agnostics that don't wan't to rally to a cause could be and my answer is simply that it doesn't need to be anything and it doesn't pretend to be either. This place is very much the opposite of RDF in the respect that here rest and banter with like minded people takes priority over debunking theists or spearheading causes. Remember that the people who made the site are the ones who left when Off topic was removed, that should give you an idea of what kind of site you find yourself in.

As I said before, erudite discourse is welcome but argumentative personalities aren't really our thing.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

El is a respected member here and has every reason to be concerned about what has happened.

Whatever happened to you over at RDF is deplorable, but please don't turn Rationalia into your fighting ground for these injustices. You also need to understand that the founding members of this forum already came from a past schism at RDF. If we were into slaying dragons we would have been going for it from the beginning.

I don't think anyone here needs to worry. The membership here has jumped by some 600 members this week, but rationalskepticism.org is up and running properly now, with 439 members as of this writing. I guess there'll be some stragglers, but most who are looking for the RDF crowd will probably continue to RS.

I hope most will pop in every now and then at least.

Well, if you skim the latest 600 people in the members list, you'll see that plenty of them have posted here on Ratz, and I hope it isn't only in the "Announcement about RDF" sub-forum...

Well, I enjoy discussion toward learning or teaching something but I need fun just as much. I agree very strongly with what I see as your underlying point that we are not defined by being atheists, supposedly having some single world view.

I have looked at a few fora as alternatives and have settled on a wish of being part of the fun in Ratz with serious tits bits, and part of the message on RatSkep, with fun bits.
