In the US the copyright is assumed. It merely has to be asserted by the author. You have it until you don't defend it. The Moderator's shortened the quoted text and attributed it to better meet the Fair Use defense.

Remember it is fairly common practice for copyright holders to attempt to silence unfavorable criticisms by asserting copyright against a site. Eventhough Dave claims to have had permission for his plagiarized text, that means nothing because he failed to state such in his unattributed article, if the owner didn't like the way the discussion was going, he could have sent a DMCA notice to force the site owner or to the site owner's ISP to remove the content.

These DMCA shenanigans have been a weapon in the creationist vs. thinking people wars for a while now. And more recently in the atheist wars.
