Even if you think they did - do they deserve the kind of words and hatred aimed at them that we usually expect to be expressed by Westboro Baptists?
I think a lot of the insults have died down now. Yesterday 'new about RDF'-threads were at the top of the active threads list, whereas now, more and more threads are pushing them down.
Within a week, things will settle down, I hope.

I was wondering elessarina, how long is the ride from minas tirith to chicago? :eddy:

I have a different perspective on this, and it's going to take time to put it all down, at which point I'll also cross-post it to other thread(s).

But for now I'll say this: It's a bit late in the day for RD to get sanctimonious about this sort of insult. On his own forum, the same sort of insult (or worse) directed at any outsider would have been well within the established rules, which restrained what could be said to and about fellow users, but clearly marked down any individual outside that group as fair game. We all remember the sorts of insults that were hurled at politicians, church leaders and suchlike. Of course, as I would have pointed out on more than one occasion, being able to say what you like won't win you an argument, as you still need to do that on the facts.

So the forum rules (which evolved over a long period of time) allowed this very wide latitude. The Front Page has had no such framework, and indeed it was and still is possible to vilify not only outsiders, not only forum regulars (as I found out to my cost), but also other Front Page regulars. And the Front Page would seem to be the template for the future discussion environment at RD.net.

But there's more. Remember the British Airways Cross controversy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Ai ... ontroversy

At one point during an interview, RD remarked that the woman at the centre of the case had " ... a stupid face", or words to that effect. Not surprisingly, he later had to apologize. When the matter later came up in passing on the RD.net forum, I remarked (knowing full well that RD himself was on-line) that this was not exactly his finest moment. RD graciously conceded this, but offered in mitigation the fact that he was angered at what the woman was demanding. Does that sound like double standards to you? To me, there can never be any excuse for that sort of deeply personal remark. Of the the two insults - RD's, and the one direct against Josh Timonen - I know which one I would be far more offended (indeed mortified) to be in receipt of.

Well, I have stopped crying into my cups. On sober reflection two grand things [of a personal nature] came out of all this:-
1. I am no longer a mod! Yay! :food: :snooze: :drunk:
2. I narrowly escaped being nuked royally by susu.exp who challenged me to a formal debate [quiver!]  :funny: :funny:

I can not even begin with how much I wish I'd used a more simple turn of phrase, to express that I thought he looks like a full of poo-poo Hick-boy. Of course this never would have warranted a mention. Notorious for a poorly used turn of phrase rendered outrageous through the filters of cross-cultural difference. What ever. I'll remember next time that you can call lots of people lots of things, but you can't call someone ugly. . .

Indeed you shouldn't. A person isn't by and large responsible for their basic physical appearance, and it has bugger all to do with what they think or say.

RD had made some choice contributions on the forum and front page in the intervening period BTW. It seems that being in the company of us louts has had a negative impact on his manners. No joking. :ddpan:

Yes, klr, you're probably right, and perhaps my drawing any correlation in this instance is just confirmation bias.

As for RD's contributions - It's do as I say, obviously. That he is so easily influenced is the shock!

I'll refer you to my fairy protector on that point, thank you.

I'm not too proud to hide behind her skirts.

(now I'll be very disappointed if nobody takes advantage of the brilliant one-liner opportunity I've just set myself up for)
