Plus, the thread is locked, despite the fact that the entire forum is read-only now, which means that locking the thread is entirely superfluous. Illustrative of the mindset, I would say.

You shouldn't be embarrassed to be a Dawk. The Dawks are here now. Dawks are warm, compassionate, empathetic, generous, humourous and basically good eggs who want to bimble along happily. Don't be ashamed. It isn't us who are in the wrong.

I can tell you one small consequence right now. I plan to never again buy one of his books. And I wasn't even a member of the RDF community.

My name is Niall O'Sullivan. As in the RDF, my account links to a site where you can see who I am and a list of my public appearances. I'm not difficult for anyone to find. I worked my arse off for nothing but the joy of helping the culture you seem to despise, as well as defusing many volatile situations in the Richard Dawkins section, balancing your wish not to have people punished for personally attacking you with having to deal with the uproar from the community whenever someone did. I split the off topic chit chat that annoyed you from threads that you started or posted in, with General Error kicking in as I tried. Never bothered you with a pm, apart from yesterday when it all kicked off, never asked for anything in return, not even a thank you.

I can tell you one small consequence right now. I plan to never again buy one of his books. And I wasn't ever really a member of the RDF community.

I support an informal effort to down-rate Dawkins' books on places such as Amazon - with explanations, of course, reasonably phrased to point out the hypocrisy of his stance on "clear-thinking" when he really supports the destruction of information and censorship of dissent.

It could easily include references to other writings by other evolutionary biologists - like "Your Inner Fish" - so that people who need the science are not turned away from purchasing an evolution book altogether, just turned away from Dawkins.

Don't be fooled by Paula Kirby acting like a fresh voice of reason for the other side. She is already involved with the team running the front page and I will not be surprised at all if she ends up in a high up position on the new site. The exciting new site.

Seriously, Josh has his full support, and I talked with both of them before posting this. Hard decisions were made. Yes, moderators and contributors poured a lot of hard work into the forums, but at the same time, the output wasn't what Richard Dawkins wanted. YOU, the happy participants in the chaos of free-wheeling discussions, wanted what you got, but ultimately it's the RDF that has to decide whether it serves their goals.

Now I like happy chaos and enjoy seeing what bizarreness it produces, but I'm not in charge of a big-budget professional organization that has to deal with a rather stuffy world. I'm also confident that no matter what Richard Dawkins does, that happy chaos will erupt somewhere else...just somewhere else where Richard doesn't have to feel responsible for it.
