Abstract
AbstractMobile phone technologies have been hailed as a promising means for delivering mental health interventions toyouth and adolescents, the age group with high cell phone penetration and with the onset of 75% of all lifetimemental disorders. Despite the growing evidence in physical health and adult mental health, however, littleinformation is available about how mobile phones are implemented to deliver mental health services to theyounger population. The purpose of this scoping study was to map the current state of knowledge regardingmobile mental health (mMental Health) for young people (age 13–24 years), identify gaps, and considerimplications for future research. Seventeen articles that met the inclusion criteria provided evidence for mobilephones as a way to engage youth in therapeutic activities. The flexibility, interactivity, and spontaneous natureof mobile communications were also considered advantageous in encouraging persistent and continual access tocare outside clinical settings. Four gaps in current knowledge were identified: the scarcity of studies conductedin low and middle income countries, the absence of information about the real-life feasibility of mobile tools,the need to address the issue of technical and health literacy of both young users and health professionals,and the need for critical discussion regarding diverse ethical issues associated with mobile phone use. Wesuggest that mMental Health researchers and clinicians should carefully consider the ethical issues related topatient–practitioner relationship, best practices, and the logic of self-surveillance

We don't need research to tell us that young people derive a sense of connectedness and belonging through engaging in and sharing cultural norms and practices, or that the formation of an young person's social identity is going to be informed by things like mobile phones, the media they preference and consume, and a raft of other cultural tokens. We were young once - we know how it works! In our day is was books, comics, music, movies and TV, and probably illicit smoking and drinking - digital media, computers and mobiles simply add more elements to the mix. However, in our day we wouldn't have had unfiltered access to extreme violence--like real-time streaming from a war zone for example--or unfettered access to pron--some of which is relatively harmless, but some of which is wholly unrealistic, deeply unpleasant, potentially disturbing and/or dangerous. We also didn't get to bring the playground home in our pockets and carry it around with us wherever we went.
We can't make the cultural or digital landscapes a safe space for minors, but we can help minors keep themselves safe in the cultural landscape by having honest conversations with them about things like warfare, sex, relationships, political engagement, economics etc. Personally, I think that to enhance the mental health of young people we need to reassess how we go about education, which in the UK appears to actively work against the good mental health of many children and young people...

... According to the report, one factor within the educational system which is causing mental ill-health is the “teach to test” culture. Studies have shown that the pressure of examinations is a causal factor in mental ill-health. This claim is substantiated empirically by a piece of research by Rodway et al (2016), who conducted a multi-agency study which found that “exam pressures” were a contributing cause in 27% of suicides among under-20s within England. In view of this, “Making the grade” states it is imperative that we explore other forms of assessing young people, such as presenting and coursework-based activities which may mitigate pressures placed on young people.
Furthermore, the report sheds light on the importance of relationships between both staff and student and student and student. These dynamic relationships play a vital role in fostering healthy pupil well-being and a sense of belonging within pupils. As feeling less connected in school is a predictor of poor mental health outcomes, it is paramount that young pupils have safe and flourishing relationships within the educational setting....

"No Child Left Behind education reform is its expansion of state-mandated standardized testing as means of assessing school performance. Now most students are tested each year of grade school as well. Testing of students in the United States is now 150 years old."

A fifth of teenagers watch porn frequently and some are addicted, UK study finds
A major new survey of British schoolchildren’s attitudes to pornography has found significant numbers of young people aged between 14 and 18 are watching it frequently, with some becoming addicted to sexually explicit content.
Teachers say they are being left to “pick up the pieces” from the damage pornography causes in schools, with the proliferation of adult material leading to warnings of sexually harmful behaviour among teenagers.
The headteacher of one school involved in the survey said the impact of violent pornography on her pupils is so severe that they have used special training to respond to a large rise in reports of sexual abuse.
The study by Dignify, a charity that researches sexual abuse, spoke to 4,000 children between the ages of 14 and 18 in Hertfordshire. It found that 22% of students had viewed porn on multiple occasions. Of those, one in five said they had a porn habit and one in 10 said they felt addicted. Those who watched more than once were more likely to report having acted out something they first saw in pornography videos.

A report from the children’s commissioner for England last month also highlighted the violent nature of much of the pornography that children are reporting seeing at a young age.
The survey found that a third of children had seen porn by the age of 10, with over two-thirds of young adults aged 18-21 saying they had seen violent pornography before turning 18. The report also highlighted correlations between early exposure to porn and the development of harmful attitudes.
Groups who work with adult sex offenders are also now trying to focus their work in schools to stop young people developing sexually harmful behaviour...
