soup and nust, who knows what that means?

Post by Svartalf » Fri Dec 16, 2022 3:12 am

Hello people, I'm facing a linguistic conundrum. I was reading a novel from the 1930s, and stumbled on a reference, repeated more than once, to "soup an'nuts", apparently referring to a wealthy man's attire, as he's also mentioned as wearing a high hat.

I tried wikiing it, and after that googling it, to no avail... plenty of "soup to nuts" mentions, but none for the specific expression, and none that seemed even remotely applicable. So I'm launching this bottle into the sea, and maybe some of you have more data.

I think it's just an alternate usage of the standard 'soup to nuts' (meaning 'the whole package', 'everything included'). In the case of attire it would be describing somebody who is wearing all standard accoutrements of the day (things like waistcoat with pocket watch and chain with fob) and probably a few optional ones, like for instance spats.

Possible, though the way it was used seemed to refer to a specific item... must admit I'm not quite familiar enough with Merritt's style to draw any conclusions.

Bring back spats! Men's fashion has been a wasteland for decades.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Bah, me, I like hoodies even though from behind one may think I'm 40 years younger and possibly the wrong color

Believe it or not there is a Dutch word nust. It means clothes made of natural materials.

Another one from the 20/30s was 'a big butter and egg man' - for someone who was pecuniarily well positioned.

What? Surely you remember this classic from 1926? Everyone was singing it down our way.

Sorry, the only Armstrong I had ready access as a kid was the good book and Baloo's song from Jungle Book

You poor thing - I didn't realise you'd had such a difficult and culturally deprived childhood :hugs:

But it's never too late to remedy the situation.
