Re: Anti-Vaxxers
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/06/us/p ... aring.htmlWASHINGTON — A doctor who is skeptical of coronavirus vaccines and promotes the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a Covid-19 treatment will be the lead witness at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on Tuesday, prompting criticism from Democrats who say Republicans should not give a platform to someone who spreads conspiracy theories.
Dr. Jane M. Orient is the executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, a group that opposes government involvement in medicine and views federal vaccine mandates as a violation of human rights.
Dr. Orient also took aim at Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease specialist, asking, “Why is he dictating care for 340 million Americans?”

Genuine anti-vaxxers exist and merit opprobrium, but I don't like this new trend of describing anyone who has perfectly reasonable concerns about vaccines that have been sped through the approval process with indecent haste as anti-vaxx. It's worrying to see such dogmatism creeping into science.

I wouldn't say that it is "indicent haste" that a technology that has been in active development for over 20 years, has been trialed in clinical trials for more than 10 years and now has a concrete implementation that was tested on 200,000 people is used to combat a virus that hits a totally naive (having no immunity whatsoever) population with an IFR of about 0.8 in the the civilized West and a potential for severe long time damage on 10% of the infected people.

'Indecent haste' eh? What's a decent velocity, in your opinion? Would you prefer we wait for a 24 month approval period, or 18 months, or maybe 12 months would be a less indecorous amount of time to approve a new therapy?Strontium Dog wrote:Genuine anti-vaxxers exist and merit opprobrium, but I don't like this new trend of describing anyone who has perfectly reasonable concerns about vaccines that have been sped through the approval process with indecent haste as anti-vaxx. Re: Anti-Vaxxers
The outfit she's head of also promoted the idiotic 'masks no good' position. What a joy it is to have a major political party of the US promoting this shit.
'Senate Witness Leads Group That Has Long-Hyped Anti-Vaxx Cause'
'Senate Witness Leads Group That Has Long-Hyped Anti-Vaxx Cause'
In an October opinion piece, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, whose state has suffered one of the worst coronavirus death rates in the world, cited an AAPS [arch-conservative Association of American Physicians and Surgeons] “fact sheet” to raise questions about the effectiveness of masks against the virus. The “mask facts” page highlighted research that falsely claimed mask use “will not be effective at preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission” and that it will make schools “a threatening and unsafe environment” which could produce “psychological damage in children.”
When President Trump began to champion the use of the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 miracle drug, AAPS, like many conservative organizations, took up the drug as a cause. The group filed a lawsuit against the FDA for restricting usage of the hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients and cheered on Republicans like Sens. Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, and Ted Cruz who criticized the agency’s restrictions.
Before the pandemic, AAPS reliably championed conservative health causes—fighting against the Affordable Care Act, tobacco taxes, Medicare, and Medicaid— nd criticized Democratic presidential candidates like former President Barack Obama (for using “neurolinguistic programming” in speeches) and Hillary Clinton (who Dr. Orient concluded could be “neurologically disabled” during the 2016 campaign, according to Breitbart).
Over the years AAPS has enjoyed close relationships with Republican members of Congress who have promoted its work and invited staff to testify in congressional hearings. Sen. Rand Paul, a member of the Homeland Security committee Orient will appear before, isn’t just a fan of AAPS, he’s been a member for decades.

Vaccine development normally takes years, sometimes decades. Surely nobody can argue that a few months is highly unusual.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Tue Dec 08, 2020 10:14 pm'Indecent haste' eh? Doesn't bother me either way to be honest, as I have no intention of taking it.
I look forward to government providing the number of deaths within 28 days of an immunisation, as they do with deaths within 28 days of a coronavirus infection.

I don't know who hijacked Galaxian's account, butt it seems Galaxian has hijacked Strontium Dog's account.
The idea that number of covid deaths in the UK is exaggerated because everyone is counted who dies within 28 days after positive test is a hoax. This number is used as a preliminary statistic to be able to report statistics on a daily basis. The numbers are corrected later on based on causes of death given on death certificates. Also, considering the statistics on excess deaths in the UK actually shows that the official numbers on covid deaths underestimate the actual numbers.

Luckily Trump screwed up our order, so by June when we get vaccines, the rest of the world will have been guinea pigs for half a yrar.
