Robot Friend

Post by pErvinalia » Thu Jul 19, 2018 8:50 am

I want one. I wish they would hurry up and develop artificially intelligent robots. The best thing about such a thing is that I could turn them on and off as I needed them. So I need a bit of friendly conversation, I turn it on, but when it starts going on a bit much, I just pull the plug. Kind of like a pet dog - in that when you want to talk they listen, and when you want to rest, they sit quietly at your feet. But you don't have to feed a robot. What's not to like?

You could always just phone the Samaritans.

Yeah, but I can't hug a Samaritan over the phone.

They're a voluntary counselling service that people can call when they're in crisis.

Trouble with Samaritans is they are there to listen not suggest solutions like the CAB or local mafia. I've got a owl dust gatherer that does exactly the same thing and no chance of accidentally meeting it in the pub later for a emotional rewind.

I'm not sure there could be the mutual respect between an ai and a human that there must be for there to be a true friendship. For one thing, the power dynamic would be insurmountable - you have veto on everything and if your 'friend' gets too much you can just switch him off for a while.

What you will have is a conversation slave you pretend to be on equal footing with. It might be entertaining; it might be useful; but it won't be your friend.
