I just wanted to remember this.
The green careening planet
spins blindly in the dark
so close to annihilation.
Listen. No one listens. Meow.

Short and not so sweet for the fiancee.
Apparently he bought a machine gun, and turned their wedding into a mass shooting.
The end.

You're probably right. I think he got lucky. She sounds like a bit of a slapper to me. Far better to let her marry the other guy, then have her as a bit on the side later.rachelbean wrote:Much better for the fiance to have it happen before the wedding![]()
I worked part-time in a public library, just before I left school.
There were books full of that stuff. We used to call them dumpers, because you didn't sort them out, or file them on shelves, you just dumped huge piles of them on a table, and women would grab great armfuls of them.

Vonnegut is not exactly ladies fantasy material. Having worked in a library I'd think you'd be aware of that

Never heard of her/him. But the piece is a romance? No?rachelbean wrote:Vonnegut is not exactly ladies fantasy material. Having worked in a library I'd think you'd be aware of that
Seemed like what you might find in a teenage girl's magazine, to me.

You are American aren't you? And you worked in a library? But you've never heard of Kurt Vonnegut?
Though the subject might be romantic and sentimental, the style is signature. If it wasn't him it would be someone imitating him. He doesn't usually write such sweet stories, but I thought it was a nice one

No, I'm British, and worked in a library over forty years ago, while I was still at school.rachelbean wrote:You are American aren't you? And you worked in a library? But you've never heard of Kurt Vonnegut?
I'm not much into fiction anyway, especially science fiction, although I have absolutely no idea why that is.
The piece just reminded me of dumper novels, which brought back fond memories of part-time work at the library.

Re: I just wanted to remember this.
If Vonnegut didn't usually write stuff like this, it seems to me that he was taking the mick out of the genre, a bit.
He took all the old cliches out of romantic novels and squashed them into a short piece.
The undercurrent of undeclared love, the approaching marriage to another, the will-he-wont-he at the end, and the final scene, they've all been played out in a million romance novels and B movies.
If he wasn't mocking the genre, he might have just dashed it off to prove that he could do that, too.
But my guess is it was a pisstake.
