English Doomed as Global Language, Academic Says

Post by FBM » Tue Dec 28, 2010 11:29 am

I wouldn't really care except for the fact that a) this is how I make my living and b) this is how I meet most of the ladies whom I, erm, take under my wing and...educate...

Kidding aside, seems that this Ostler guy backs up his claims with some significant precedents. But...how about Japanese? The world's second biggest economy for so long, but Japanese never really became a globally-dominant language in proportion to its (former) economic standing, eh?

English Doomed as Global Language, Academic Says

British linguist Nicholas Ostler says the English language's days as the global lingua franca are numbered despite even as it enjoys unheard-of global dominance. In his recent book "The Last Lingua Franca: English until the Return to Babel" he reaches the conclusion after tracing the rise and fall of one-time international languages Aramaic, Phoenician, and Persian.

Ostler majored in Latin at Oxford University and has a doctorate in Sanskrit from MIT.

The reasons are what he calls the "Three Rs" -- ruin, relegation and resignation. Language is surprisingly easily influenced by political factors, he says, and the influence of English will weaken with the diminishing power of the world's sole superpower, the U.S. Russian, which was understood by around 10 percent of people in Central Asia in the early 20th century, soared to almost 100 percent in 1959, just after the region became communist, but the proportion plummeted with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Its fate was similar in Eastern Europe.

As for English, some 300 million out of the 7 billion people in the world have English as their primary language, and that has been the case for some time. Already some countries like Sri Lanka and Tanzania have removed English from its list of official languages on a surge of nationalism.

The economic prowess of Anglo-Saxon countries that were behind the spread of influence of English in the last three to four centuries is falling. In emerging economies like China, Brazil and Russia, foreign investors need to learn the local language as English is not enough to communicate.

From a sociological perspective, the age of the Internet put English in a similar position to the one Latin faced when printing technology was developed. The printing press boosted demand for books in local languages and accelerated the fall of Latin. By the same token, the past decade saw an explosion of languages other than English across the web, such as Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.

Ostler predicts that the demise of English will make learning a foreign language a thing of the past. Due to the development of voice recognition and instant interpretation technology will do away with the need for people to translate and interpret, he claims.

After the population crash the isolation of the few suriviors will kickstart a fresh wave of languages. Like Latin the use of English as a base ingredient in the new mix will mean it'll be recalled with similar nostalgia. Whosl ha er !

Best off-the-cuff remark goes to Pawiz.

So which language did he suggest would supplant English? I saw Russian and Chinese tossed out there. I'd like to learn Russian anyway.

It being removed from the official language list doesn't really do much for me as an indicator of where it's headed... It neglects taking into account the huge sway of television and movies, and business... business will still continue to be influenced by western countries with good, stable traditions in dealing in English, which the Asian markets do make an effort to cater to.

Not convinced at all.

You don't buy into his Star Trek Universal Translator prediction?

Academics from the 'humanities' will write any sensational garbage to get their name in the press.

I'm not really convinced, either. Chinese doesn't stand a chance at supplanting English, if for no other reason than the software issue. 20,000 Chinese characters can't be put on a keyboard. When a person is typing in Chinese, they have to type in the pronunciation of the character, then search through often dozens of possible matches before being able to enter the next word in the sentence. Much the same for Japanese, I understand.

As for anything like a "Universal Translator", I'm pretty skeptical. Too many idioms and figurative speech, not to mention sarcasm, irony, etc. A computer would never be able to pick up the nuances. If everyone using such a device was careful to avoid those aspects of speech and only use plain, dictionary-friendly sentence constructions, it might be possible, but such a thing wouldn't be useful for everyday conversations in real life, like, for instance, if you're on holiday in a foreign country.

No doubt we're not going to get there anytime soon, Universal Translator-wise... for the life of me I can't imagine non-human language, produced by non-human (non-terrestrial) minds and vocal organs. And yes, there's too much ambiguity and whatnot in common speech... I am tricked by people's choice of words all the time, and for fear of sounding like a bloody luddite: I'd like to see a machine do better ;P
