The origin of 'Mc'
I've been trying to find information on the origin of the prefix 'Mc' in surnames. I know it's a rather Irish thing, but where does it come from? I've had trouble in the past, because the C is a small C, and it takes location above the M and A in my surname. Idiots from phone centers pronounce it 'Muck', when in fact it's 'Mak'.

It's likely ancient in origin. it just means "son of" really.
In Welsh, "ap" is used in the same context and comes from the word for son, "mab".
