Where Did The Word "Dog" Come From?

Post by cowiz » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:01 pm

Seriously, no one fucking has a clue.
O.E. docga, a late, rare word used of a powerful breed of canine. It forced out O.E. hund (the general Germanic and IE word; see canine) by 16c. and subsequently was picked up in many continental languages (cf. Fr. dogue (16c.), Dan. dogge), but the origin remains one of the great mysteries of English etymology. Many expressions -- a dog's life (c.1600), go to the dogs (1610s), etc. -- reflect earlier hard use of the animals as hunting accessories, not pampered pets. In ancient times, "the dog" was the worst throw in dice (attested in Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit, where the word for "the lucky player" was lit. "the dog-killer"), which plausibly explains the Greek word for "danger," kindynas, which appears to be "play the dog." Slang meaning "ugly woman" is from 1930s; that of "sexually aggressive man" is from 1950s. Adj. phrase dog-eat-dog attested by 1850s. Dog tag is from 1918. To dog-ear a book is from 1650s; dog-eared in extended sense of "worn, unkempt" is from 1894.

Probably fucking Shakespeare. That asshole invented words that travelled back in time and entered regular use.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

I have often wondered about it too. I mean, what is the connection between fucking random strangers in Tesco's carpark and domesticated canines? :dono:

It comes from the using of walking the dog to cover your real purpose of peering through car windows at random people fucking
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

On the OP  I recall reading something similar in maybe one of Bill Bryson's books. My own hypothesis is that it's onomatopœic on dogs' barks.
