Monet (for Paco)

Post by Rum » Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:16 pm

Last night's drunken ramblings and discussions with Paco and the Dawk touched on many things, including Art and what it might or might not be. Paco and I however were in more or less mutual agreement that the artist who painted the picture below, whose name (which I know like my own escaped me due to wine on brain syndrome) is Monet.

Monet gradually was going blind as he painted, over and over again, images of water lilies in his own purpose build water garden. For me he was affirming life and colour and the vibrancy of things and hanging on to those things even as life faded for him.

This is for Paco then, with a link to much more on the great painter:http://www.artofmonet.com/Home_Page.htm

He habitually painted the water lilies in his garden at Giverny, and the bridge on the pond, as well as haystacks in fields. Over and over again - and yet each one is different.

There are a couple of Monet's water lilies in Cardiff Museum. I didn't realise until fairly recently. They are fantastic to see.

I used to have a long poster that covered one wall of my childhood bedroom, of Monet's water lillies at Giverny. I bought it at a special exhibit of his works at the Boston Museum of Fine Art back in the 80's. I loved his work, pretty much without exception, and I remember his series of the cathedral at Rouen with particular clarity.

Thanks for sharing this.
