Question about Goth
Is there a slang term for the fingerless gloves?
Any other slang related to articles of clothing or objects?
Thanks

Er..in English there are quite a few slang words for underwear but I can't think of any for outer clothing..though there may well be some.
Underwear? Skivvies, keks, tit-bags...and many more..
As to 'objects', yes a few thousand!!!!!!

Re: Question about Goth
Would mitts be a proper word for those gloves? I think it is, but may be committing a gallicism.

Mitts would do, though they also mean these:-

Re: Question about Goth
Fishnet gloves are the gothy ones.
Maybe hobo gloves if they're fingerless and wooly?

I know these aren't particularly Goth, but the same idea:

Re: Question about Goth
No idea, I think they're just fingerless biker gloves, hijacked by fashion?
With no particular name as far as I can remember.

There a many slang terms for clothes. "Wife-beater", "Cutoffs", "T-back", "Daisy Dukes", "Do Rag", etc. Clothing itself is referred-to by a lot of slang words - "Duds", "Threads", "Gear", "Colors" and so forth. Footware have a ton of slang terms - "Stilletos", "Runners/Trainers/Sneakers/Tennies/Etc.", "Ropers"...Rum wrote:Er..in English there are quite a few slang words for underwear but I can't think of any for outer clothing
Oh my favorite - "Sling-backs".
Re: Question about Goth
Given hobos are frequently impoverished, I don't see the connection. The wooly ones people around here have used for decades are usually the same price as the fully-fingered ones with (of course) less material. Methinks if I was a hobo, I'd want more warmth and just get regular glovesbeige wrote:Maybe hobo gloves if they're fingerless and wooly?

Re: Question about Goth
The wooly ones that have the fingers removed in an improvised fashion tend to get all scraggly at the ends that have been cut. I believe that might be where the reference to homeless people originates, not from the pricing.BrettA wrote:Given hobos are frequently impoverished, I don't see the connection. Although that's anecdotal, and I'm not sure if the term was coined by someone in my social circle, or if it's more widespread

Re: Question about Goth
Now I'm even curiouser... you're suggesting people *remove* the fingers? For what purpose, please? (The ones I was talking about are made that way and thus don't get scraggly from any cutting/removing.) Still - maybe for amused - why do Goths need 'em?beige wrote:The wooly ones that have the fingers removed in an improvised fashion tend to get all scraggly at the ends that have been cut. Re: Question about Goth
I'm not sure, I never took all that much notice in the goings on - so again, I have no idea if that's just the people I knew that wore those kinds of gloves while having a "goth phase" or not.
As for the gloves themselves, they got ones with fingers and just chopped the ends off. Why they didn't buy de-fingered ones is also beyond me, but I assume again it was something to do with fashion.
Admittedly a subject I know nothing much of

Re: Question about Goth
It's part of the fashion statement.
Probably more a lace thing:

Appreciate the clothes slang, but I meant specifically in the Goth culture.
