The US is known for contracting its more questionable military activities out to mercenaries. Remember Blackwater? One of the first contracts, worth $488 million, was helping the US forces out in Afghanistan, mainly doing jobs the official army could not afford to be seen doing.

Australia sucks arse big time on the environmental front, and it is not solely down to the conservative coalition currently in government. During the last election campaign the Labor party could not bring itself to tell Adani, and the electorate, that the company has no future here if it wins the election. Adani has a coal mining project in the works in Queensland. Although it had to scale it down, it is still huge. It now plans to produce 10 million tonnes of coal per year. According to the environmental impact statement, the mine was expected to produce 200 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, based on a 60-year lifespan. Adani also needs 12.5 billion litres of water per year to wash the coal, which will drop the water table by several metres. Goodbye, artesian wells. So far it has lost two cases regarding its planned water consumption brought to court by conservationists, but it is currently having another go at getting it approved. The conservative government is doing everything it can to oblige.

The Blackwater thing (egregious as it was) was within countries that the US military was also engaged. Without ruling it out, I have not read of any suggestion of US government policy in Africa being assisted by mercenaries...
