Are you sayin that here in Scotland we speak English right?Svartalf wrote:That's how I was taught it too, though I must admit that the teacher was old already in the mid 80s, and that I had to wait till after I left secondary education for the subject to even get broached... before then, "will" was the only way we were taught.John_fi_Skye wrote:When it's the "normal" future tense ("future indicative active"), "shall" is first person, while "will" is second and third.

Having said all that, it's true that "shall" is indeed fading out, and becoming archaic.

"We shall not, we shall not be moved..."
I do find myself using it occasionally, because I was educated at one of our "Public" schools which had pretensions of being somewhat Etonian... Pappa's point, I suppose...
I shall probably never lose some of that influence...

Re: "shall" vs "will"?
As far as I'm aware (cba reading the thread sorry) "shall" is relevant to responding to a request, "will" pertains to a command, both have different levels of responsibility implied dependent on obligation.

I think we should go back to 'shalt' and 'wilt'.

Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.
