Thanks, and agreed. I just don't hear a difference between of pronunciation Valley-Girl talk and what may be generally termed a Californian accent. All I hear is a difference in intonation.

I have to say that simplifying certain words - e.g., pronouncing "premiere" as "prem-eer" - grates on me.

"Sub-dialect" would the high-brow term, I guess. But Bella might support me in the idea that they can be rather incomprehensible at times. It's like my Italian is terminally tainted by living in Sicily. Or that "Yokosuka" is pronounced differently by the locals.

Again, that's true. Have any studies been made that show a sufficient difference between Valley-Girl talk to what may be regarded as a Californian accent to class the former as a sub-accent of the latter? Keep in mind that meaning of "dialect" is rather more expansive than that of "accent". I am only talking about the latter.

Are you sure these studies show a sufficient difference between Valley-Girl talk to what may be regarded as a Californian accent to class the former as a sub-accent of the latter? Sorry, but I have no access to the texts. Perhaps you could paste them.

The links are in the ValSpeak article at Wiki. Regardless of that, it's obvious to most people here that they have their own accent.

If you say so, it must be true, I suppose. Good night. I'll dream of actual evidence to emerge one day.

Bangers and Mash? Gorblimey! The only way it could be more British is if each story ended with 'Ave a banana! :hehe:
'Ave a banana? What's this? I'm not familiar with this expression. Is it terribly British? It's not too late to edit my book!

There are a lot of different ways to talk that are all from California. It's a really big state.
