Other 'world' religions have moved on and mellowed out for the most part.(they still burn witches in Africa under Xianity). The issue with Islam is that through vast swathes of the Middle East it has not mellowed out at all. And two wrongs never make a right. I've no time for the Pope and to be fair The Dalai Lama either. But Islam is the worst offender at this moment in history.

the issue has never been that the majority of one group or another is not nice. The issue is that enough people following a given ideology are doing horrible things that it rises far above the level of normal violent crime. When you have people murdering civilians while shouting Allahu Akhbar and pledging allegiance to jihadi groups which follow an extremist ideology, there is a problem to be solved. The fact that "most Muslims are nice" doesn't change the fact that there is a significant issue.

Muslims are kinda fascists in all but name. Because it embodies a legal system it is totalitarian. All else that is wrong with Islam follows from this consideration. Whilst not all Muslims are nasty it is those who are, who are the ones calling the shots. The religion must be defeated like the political ideology it really embodies. The religion must be defeated like other nasty political ideologies. Without vigilance, the forces of Christianity will seek to impose their religious beliefs on the general population. They seek to infect the machinery of government, and hence the need for a separation of church and state. While Christians today largely honor Christianity in the breach, there is always the seething underbelly to worry about. The Oceanians like Ken Ham and Ray Comfort, and the Merkans like Ted Cruz and Michelle Bachman and such, who would, if given the chance, impose a brand of theocracy on their countries and everyone's country (if they had their druthers). These people must be watched and guarded against. Beware the fish people, for they are the true enemy.

Almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so. And, Islam is right up there front and center. If we in the west had not defanged Christian sects long ago, we'd be battling them now too, and we are in many places till fighting them. There are still efforts by Christian groups to sneak their way into governments and impose their theologies on the masses.

Putting up a separation of church/mosque and state is the only thing that can prevent the ceaseless strife that that soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries (James Madison), and continues to soak the soil of the middle east and southwest asia in blood to this very day. The defeat of Islam is needed, and can only be done by building a wall of separation between mosque and state, and enforcing it, just like the wall of separation between church and state.

However, there were clear historical pressures on christianity which pulled its teeth after its time of violent excess. In muslim dominated countries at the moment, I'm not seeing the equivalent of the drive to secularise that would achieve the same social change...
