The big question regarding all of this is what is the cause? Infection would not necessarily lead to anything but low level easily controlled outbreaks. So I assume we are considering a supernatural or science gone wrong type scenario?

Science gone wrong is the populist theory of the ZA. Super-virus, bioweapon, bioengineering, and so on.

At least it's better than all the fucking vampire shit.

The start of it in World War Z is pretty vague:
It starts in China when a kid and his father swim down to the bottom of a lake to loot some stuff from one of the cities covered up by the Three Gorges Dam project that flooded a big valley there. The boy is bitten by something, the father never surfaces again. An old woman says the zombie curse is revenge for the flooding of the Fengdu Ghost City, modeled after the gate of hell. (Nicely done bit of research by the author!) When the doctor who sees Patient Zero (the bitten boy - first infected) reports it to his superior, that person already recognizes the threat, so it's happened before. Then it's a series of unfortunate events as it spirals out of control and spreads.

I read WWZ a while back and enjoyed parts of it thoroughly.

You could read this...

It's not great but it gets to the point.

I like the guy's idea over at reddit - Cover yourself in protective body armor so they can't damage you during the time you're dead after being bitten, then when you reanimate you'll be in prime condition to become leader of the zombies!

I finished World War Z - It was okay through about 70% then lost its edge, IMO. He tried a little too hard at times to work in some political pontificating. He doesn't like Jon Stewart, I guess. :dunno:
