I ♥ Abstract Expressionism, and European Modernism too. I like conceptual art when it's done well, though I think the majority of conceptual art is usually just wankery. Most modern art and Post-Modernist art does very little for me, but occasionally some gems grab me, either for conceptual or aesthetic reasons (or both). I find most traditional depictional art to be immensely boring.Gawdzilla wrote:Jackson Bollocks. 'nuff said.

Re: Art critics must die!
Most modern (/postmodern - whatever they bollocking-well call themselves) artists are their own worst enemy's when it comes to how most people view what they do. In terms of their attitudes and how they present themselves they're far worse than the old art elite they originally set-up in opposition to.
A radical 'self-importance-ectomy' is what most modern artists, and their brown-nosing cultural hangers-on, require.

I watched that too - some of the art itself was breathtaking but the level of verbal wankerage was exceeding high. I kind of filtered it out in exchange for glimpses of Hopper, Pollack et al.Rum wrote:I know there are many people here who have something like disdain for modern art. Having gone to art college in the early 70s and therefore knowing some of the 'theory' I am not as dismissive, though I am dubious about much of it.
But when it comes to critics and commentators of modern art they should all be straggled by their own ball bag strings! I have just finished watching 'Art of Amemrica' written and presented by Andrew Graham-Dixon (the hyphenated name gives you a good idea about the wankerage level..).
I could quote at least fifty inconsistent, contradictory, illogical, opinionated, ill founded, empty headed, twattish things from his script. Also stupid and full of vanity. But here's just a few.
'Minimalist art was like a supermarket shelf. Stacks of commodities, but with no labels or content'.
He was 'riding above the gusts of modern America to find higher truths'.
'I love it when the paint is on the floor. It's a bit like the painter's blood'.
''This is America seeping puss'.
Fuck off you twat.
Sorry, not in the best of moods here.
I still don't get Rothko though - and they really should have played more than a couple of bars of Morton Feldman's Rothko Chapel when they showed it - that music moves me far more than any maroon rectangle ever could!

Deconstruct deconstructionism. It is the point of view of the losers. Remember the short, ugly, skinny, scared kid who always ratted everybody out? The chicken who made you really understand what chickenshit means?

I need to go make some art in my Duchamp sit down model.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Critics thrive on negativity. That's why I never bother with them. The fact that we listen to them is the only reason they survive, and we listen to them because they tell us to. That loop needs to be broken. We need reviewers, not critics.
