I'm a bit shit with maps to be honest, I could locate a lot of countries on a globe but you'd have to give me a second. I know for example Egypt is in Africa near the top and it'd take me a moment to click which it is but at least I don't think that, like my sister did, Egypt is a Mediterranean island. :ddpan:
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

:o Who the fuck doesn't love geography? That was my favourite subject in school. I had a brilliant geography teacher. She even won some sort of teacher of the year award I heard. I still remember almost everything she taught me.

How dare you not like something I love! :nono:

I was driving my mom and my daughter (she is 21) over the Pennines towards Newcastle from Cumbria, i.e. due east. We started talking about the lay of the land and I said I could draw a map of the world from memory more or less.

My daughter, who is average academically, though no genius as you will see asked me if we were travelling west what would be the first place we would come to. America I replied a bit puzzled that she didn't know. And its the Pacific Ocean first, she asked?

I am buying her an inflatable globe for Christmas and suing her secondary school in the new year. :nono:

Its a good job I love her dearly and she is a wonderful person in most respects. :sighsm:

Something like that. I have no idea what they teach in Irish schools these days. :what:

Physical geography and maps were some of my favourite subjects at school. I remember being bored silly because we had a few lessons where we had to learn to read the UK's OS maps (Ordnance Survey) and identify features, find co-ordinates, and so on, which I'd been doing for fun for the best part of ten years already! :freak:

I love poring over maps, and these days things like Google Earth.
maps.jpg
(I've got more OS maps downstairs.)

Although, Rum, if you were in the vicinity of the A69, Carlisle or Newcastle, and headed hypothetically west, you'd run smack into Dumfries and Galloway first, then Northern Ireland, before whacking into Newfoundland some time later. </pedant> It's shorter by great circle - try her on that next time!

I take every opportunity I can find an excuse for to show the kids the globe and point out where people we know live, and things like Google Earth, where you can see your own house in the context of the entire world, I think will make the next generation far more aware of where things are. One can hope, anyway!

At primary school, we were expected to learn by heart all the towns, rivers lakes and other geographical features in every county in Ireland. I'll bet they don't do that anymore ...
