Yeah, the Oregon-border area is mellower than the Bay Area, to my ear.hadespussercats wrote:There are a lot of different ways to talk that are all from California. I explained this one already. ALCOA- the Aluminum (note the spelling) Company of America changed the spelling of the word for branding purposes. And since pretty much all the aluminum in America comes via ALCOA, their version spread and stuck.Cormac wrote:klr wrote:I have to say that simplifying certain words - e.g., pronouncing "premiere" as "prem-eer" - grates on me.
Not to mention al-you-min-ee-yum.
(And then there is the whole "hundreds and thousands" debacle!
If you say al-you-min-ee-um here you sound like a pretentious dingbat.

There's an ALCOA plant in Lafayette, Indiana. If you see a semi trailer with "Wabash National" on it, it came from Lafayette because the aluminum was readily available.hadespussercats wrote:I explained this one already. Actually, there's a drink called the Wabash Cannonball sold at the local bars. It's quite disgusting.hadespussercats wrote:Are Wabash cannonballs made of aluminum?

I got 'neutral'. But, I've been told I have a bit of the south in my voice, especially certain words.

Neutral
You`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.
Like most Canadians (Besides Islanders, other weird Eastern places, Quebecers, and natives).. although I've been told I sound Albertan since I've lived here in B.C. I don't know what to make of that.

Your not pronouncing it that way doesn't mean you're not familiar with people around you having a weird accent.hadespussercats wrote:I'm both, but apparently I can't help you there.Svartalf wrote:The quiz pinned me to the Northeast... I'll need new yorkers of bostonians to meet me to compare notes.

ALCOA was founded in 1888 under the name of Pittsburgh Reduction Company. 80 years earlier Humphry Davy identified the existence of a metal base of alum, which he at first termed alumium and later aluminum. More on the etymology of aluminum / aluminium here.hadespussercats wrote:ALCOA- the Aluminum (note the spelling) Company of America changed the spelling of the word for branding purposes.
