My IQ was 139 when I was tested at age 18. I was tested again at age 24 for a job (a battery of IQ tests), and they called me a 'genius'.

I'm interested in how you'd react. Didn't quite seem a genius level response to me?

I'm not convinced by IQ tests myself.

That makes two.
Seriously.. is abstract thinking and puzzle solving to be the metric of intelligence? Says who?

I suppose one of these days I'll have to collect all the info I've found and make an FAQs for IQ tests and the theories behind it. There really is a lot to it, and there are many varied types of tests and theories behind their validity.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

It's not
the metric, but it certainly has to be one of the key metrics in measuring cognitive abilities. Questions remain as to how well it is measured by IQ tests, and to what degree the test results correlates with a purely genetic component of cognitive ability, versus a swathe of other potential influences, ranging from in utero conditions, early childhood nutrition and development, and education.

One way to test the genetic contribution to solving a question is checking if the answers follow a regression toward the mean pattern. IQ test scores in general follow this pattern as should be expected.
Say you knew what questions both parents and their children got right/wrong versus the rest of the population. Assume the data was gathered long term through standardized testing given to everyone at the same age.

Another way is to test various groups living in different countries with different living standards. Or through mixed race adoption Minnesota Transracial Adoption Study

I do much better on non-verbal tests than I do on written ones.
