The subtext being that the energies expended on their cup run will likely ensure that Wigan are relegated with the danger of long- term marginalization while Manchester City will continue to dominate the occupy the upper reaches of the game indefinitely.

The Premiership results over the weekend seem to have borne out my glum prognosis. In victory, ruin.

They have been duly relegated. Pity , given that they play an attractive brand of association football and their manager bears an uncanny resemblance to a fully-functioning human being.

Yup, Wigan are toast. I wonder how many players they'll be able to keep next season? Even with the (dubious*) attraction of the Europa League, I imagine a good number of players will want away.

Their better players were probably destined for greener pastures anyway. Martinez himself might also jump aboard the gravy train, if I may mix a metaphor or two.

Indeed ... Martinez may find himself shuffling down the road to Goodison Park. Can't see him going in the other direction to the Etihad though.

Speaking of which: Has there ever been a season where the top 3 clubs end up losing/firing their managers at the end of the season? :ask:

I would be pretty certain not, especially given the less febrile approach to hiring and firing which club owners adopted in times gone by. In fact, even Wenger's position is not absolutely secure, though if Spurs do manage to pip Arsenal at the goalpost for fourth place, he will probably still remain in situ.

Not for a while. Either Man U and Arsenal have been in the top 3 for the whole of the Premier League's existence. And before that, the job of football manager was much less precarious.

There is one first*: Winning the FA Cup and being relegated in the same season. Clubs have been losing finalists and relegated in the same season before** (the "Poor Man's Double"), but never this.

*This was stated on the BBC earlier, but the Beeb is not infallible. :eddy:

Birmingham City managed the League Cup and Relegation double in 2011. The moral being that a cup can prove a poisoned chalice. In fact even a cup run can be fatal.
