To damp the humorous climate, this sounds like hogwash... using an ultra powerful painkiller as a performance enhancer is kind of stupid, as it's a very good way for the horse to get severely damaged in the process... unless the goal is to rig the race, make a nag win, and send it to the knacker's right afterward, I don't see it.

Anyhow, yes painkillers are used regularly as performance enhancers in horse racing. Since about 6 of my uncle's are trainers, owners, drivers, breeders (of horses [to other horses {only on Ratz would I have to clarify that}]) or otherwise involved in horse racing, I've heard a thing or two about it.
