I was cited in a scientific paper as an expert on beetles.

I'm not.

It is actually quite easy. A woman has at least one X chromosome.

I was cited in a university paper as an expert of Lovecraft... mostly because I helped the author order what he knew of the Cthulhu mythos... I wish I could swear I could do it again.

not that fascinating, Lovecraft is actually the best known author of a whole circle of horror writers most of whom are virtually forgotten (Robert Howard has known a revival, but Clark Ashton Smith, Frank Belknap LOng, Robert Bloch, August Derleth or Donald Wandrei haven't, to name only some of them)

thanks man... I"d bet there are lots of people, starting with S T Joshi or Robert M Price who are REAL experts on such matters, I'm just a dilettante.

well, the others are worth looking at, especially Howard who wrote in a whole variety of genres, horror, swords and sorcery, western, fighting ('boxing)... and I'm not surte what else... thay guy is best known for creating the character of Conan the Cimmerian, but the other stuff he dyd is well worth reading.

OTOH, August Derleth is a bad hack, at least to my eyes

I don't know if Donald Wandrei had much of works to his name, but it was fairly good... same for Frank Belknap Long... he did one story '(the Hounds of Tindalos) that can only be qualified as Lovecraft at his best... which may be why he's forgotten in theshadow of his mentor.
