In a related area, when I was a serious skin diver in my late teens, my friend and I always did the (somewhat risky) technique of taking many deep breaths before a dive (hyperventilation). We could certainly stay down much longer (I used to spear large fish 30 metres down). However, the risk is that hyperventilation so reduces the CO2 levels in the blood that one may run out of oxygen before the "I need to breath" signal arrives - it is generated via high CO2 levels in the blood.

However (somewhat obviously) I survived many a dive... :tea:

Why, yes you can.

Explaining CO2 and light. It is a bit of a small scale thing and the walls of the bottle can help spread the heat to the rest of the bottle and the water by heat conduction

If a photon exists in a fluctatious state in which it has no absolute position or mass how does it manage to interact with our retina? How do the cells of the retina collapse the wave-function of a single photon?

This has worried me for many years.

Here's my take on that: Regardless of the inherent uncertainty that characterizes a single photon, human vision relies on the cumulative effect of a huge number of photons. In the same way that slit experiments will inevitably produce an interference pattern (a consistent and predictable result) due to the cumulative effect of multiple particles' interaction with the apparatus, so human vision produces a reasonably reliable image of the world via the same sort of phenomenon.

In regard to human vision interacting with a single photon, you may find this paper interesting: 'Testing the limits of human vision with quantum states of light: past, present, and future experiments'

Horses. They spend most of the day standing still and staring at the ground. What goes on inside their heads?
