When I'm swimming in the pool, the first lap always has me breathless at the end. But after a couple more laps, I don't get breathless. How do you explain that? For context, I swim the whole lap without breathing.

Things in orbit around each other. For example the moon and Earth. Why don't they crash into each other? Where's the moon getting the perpetual motion to resist the gravitational pull of the earth? You can't explain that. I'm guessing the moon is actually an alien craft that has to apply thrust every now and then to stop plummeting into the EArth.

The centrifugal force balances out the gravitational force. Think of it as akin to a solitary sock sticking to the wall of a spin-dryer. In the case of the earth and moon it actually overpowers gravity slightly. The distance between the two increases about 38 millimetres per year. It's all a lot more complicated, of course, but this will do for now.

I’ve ocassionally wondered how centrifugal forces fit with relativity. An object in orbit is travelling in a ‘straight’ line due to its momentum but in curved space (warped by gravity). I’m probably missing something but how does centrifugal force fit in that picture?

What's powering the force?

In circular motion, only centripetal force matters. Centrifugal force is an illusion...

A couple of high schoolers examination the idea...

Objects in the demo lose energy due to friction, which doesn't happen between bodies in the solar system - but the basic principles are clearly shown here.

You never see James Randi, Daniel Dennett and Father Christmas in the same room together. Explain that one, eh?

You've never seen Jesus, King Louis IX of France, and former president François Mitterrand in the same room either, and I thing there are explanations to that.

Why do you have to put olives in olive oil to preserve them? Olives already have olive oil in them. :prof:
