There was no sports before there were universities.

But I only mentioned this as a possibility. Where did spectator sports first appear in the modern age? Maybe it was also related to the military, also a male domain.

Sports are played in all societies, not just those with universities.
“When I was in college, I took a terrorism class. ... The thing that was interesting in the class was every time the professor said ‘Al Qaeda’ his shoulders went up, But you know, it is that you don’t say ‘America’ with an intensity, you don’t say ‘England’ with the intensity. You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar

There was no spectator sports in the modern sense before the 19th century in Europe.

No sports before there were universities? you forget ancient Greece and its multitude of games, the Olympian ones being the tree that hides the forest, or the Roman games of the circus (horses and chariot races) and amphitheater (gladiators among others)

There were spectator sports in Greece and Rome, in ancient times, and spectator sports are not the only sports. Even in villages and small group societies, sport will be engaged in, and some people will play and others will watch.

I not only loathe the presumed male obligation to 'know' about sports, I actively resist and undermine it where possible. Along with that other great stalwart of male non-communication, cars, an interest in sport is supposed to represent both a token of one's masculine credentials and a 'safe space' in which social pleasantries can take place. Bor-ring. I'm not saying I don't like sport - I've enjoyed many sports as a participant and a spectator (equestrianism, pugilism, rugby, kabaddi...), but the sneers of small-dicked males who look askance at me for not having a 'team', for having watched 'the match', or for having no idea who put in the best practice lap in the Venusian grand prix bounce right off me. Dickheads.

This sport dates back to the middle ages...

I know almost nothing about sports. I don't watch any of them, couldn't name a single player on any team, and could not care less about any of them. Except competitive bacon and cheese eating, that's fucking brill.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Oh, I like you guys just that much more. I resigned from a job a few years ago where sports was everything.

It drove me nucking futs.

It annoys me almost as much as those blokes who go to the gym just to exercise their forearms - you know the type.

I quite agree, although I still like watching a game of Aussie rules on the weekend. A lovely mixture of skill and brutality...

It must be an anglo-saxon thing. Men here rarely talk about sport in normal social meetings and cars are definitely a nono. Holidays and travels are the thing. Discussing other countries.

The most macho sport has got to be bull riding. Being twanged about like a rag doll on the back of a ton of angry beef is an idiot's season ticket to the emergency room.
