Yeah, why not? Mocking the views of others is a great way of avoiding having to actually explain your own views..

Since when is there something wrong with mocking the views of others? And, it's not an either-or proposition.Brian Peacock wrote:Yeah, why not? Mocking the views of others is a great way of avoiding having to actually explain your own views..

Can a biological male who identifies as a female mansplain, or would they transplain? If they had the chop-n-drill would it then be femsplaining? What about a woman who had an addadicktome?
I just don't understand.
I just don't understand.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

All highly successful and highly visible media products have some sort of an effect on the society that is exposed to them (as well, clearly, as being at least a partial reflection of the society in which they are created...)Forty Two wrote:I was thinking of becoming a staff writer for The Guardian.
I could write an article about how a Disney cartoon has "real and material" impacts on entire societies. That kind of thing.
The question is the size and nature of such effects. Some social science people have a tendency to over-dramatise the effects of their pet object of research, but that does not mean can we laughingly dismiss the idea of effects in general.

We do laugh at them, when there is no evidence to support their assertions, and article after article claims that sexism, violence and racism, etc., are caused by movies and videogames. Given that society has become less sexist and racist as movies and videogames have increased, we ought to conclude, if anything, that they have a beneficial effect, even as movies and videogames become more realistic, violent and sexual, etc.

I doubt the trends you suggest actually exist, certainly in such a simplistic form. "Effects" has both a broader and more subtle remit, one at least worth considering.Forty Two wrote:We do laugh at them, when there is no evidence to support their assertions, and article after article claims that sexism, violence and racism, etc., are caused by movies and videogames. That's some spectacular logic there. It would be coherent if all movies and videogames were posited to cause sexism, violence and racism. As they aren't, we can ignore your conclusion.Forty Two wrote:We do laugh at them, when there is no evidence to support their assertions, and article after article claims that sexism, violence and racism, etc., are caused by movies and videogames. The name of the Garland puppeteer is Marius Roodt. His point was to demonstrate the lack of fact checking in journalism, and he was not specifically gunning for HuffPo. He could not have picked a more suitable target, though, considering that nobody with two brain cells to rub together already knows better than to think of Breitbart, Infowars et al as legitimate news outlets.rainbow wrote:Turns out the blogger was a fake, actually turned out to be a pale male, who decided to troll Huff 'n Puff.pErvin wrote:laklak wrote:HuffPo blogger thinks white men shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Roodt now regrets what he has done, but something good may come of it. Cheapskates (and not just The Huffington Post) may realise that they'll have to spend a bit of money on fact checking if they want to rebuild their shredded credibility and the clicks that generate their revenue that flow from it. I'm not expecting a return to the days where copy editors proofread for spelling and grammar, and snipped excess rhetorical flourishes, but who knows, those sites might feel compelled to start paying their contributors at least a pittance in order to attract adequately researched and well written articles, and begin doing some rudimentary fact checking.

Re: A theory on the college campus issues.
You should ignore my conclusion, as it is just as arbitrary as the reverse, that they do cause sexism, violence and racism, and that was the point of my post. There is no evidence that movies and video games cause sexism, violence and racism (even movies and videogames that have sexism, violence and racism in them).pErvin wrote:That's some spectacular logic there. Well why didn't you just say that? That is at least reasonable, unlike constructing a busted logical exercise that means your conclusion has to be rejected on the basis of your flawed premise.

Re: A theory on the college campus issues.
Also, I'm not surprised that there is no evidence that movies and video games cause sexism etc. I doubt there is anybody that would seriously argue that. I'm guessing some people argue that movies and video games can contribute to sexism etc. That's a different proposition altogether, and one that at least on the surface makes some sense.
