Here you have register just to live at your address. Dont you have to in Germany? In Belgium, France,Spain and Portugal you have to and I think Italy as well. It is an old Napoleonic thing.
register? where, the only thing I had to register for was to vote... then again, every organisation that I benfit from (pension, social security, health service...) do happen to know where I live.

Dont have to register your home address in France?

Everything here is based on your citizen's number (BSN:burgerservicenummer). You get that when your birth is registered. As Immigrant you get that when you apply for a residence permit from the IND (Immigratie en Naturalisatie Dienst). You need the number to register at the town hall your place of residence. Everything is connected to your BSN. All your finance, health and education.

The Dutch don't think much about privacy. When I was there last weekend, this was obvious. Many houses have huge Windows like shop fronts that allow you to see everything that's going on in the living room when driving by. No curtains.

It is one left over of the religious times. The elders of the church demanded to be able to see in just in case something was going on. It has stuck in the psyche especially that part you were in.

Here in the west you seldom see it these days. I bet you did not see many headscarf's either. Their numbers fade out after Utrecht.

It is a nice sign and that is about all it is. Nothing happens in those places but they like the signs.

That sounds really discriminatory against undocumented aliens. :coffee:

If entitled to, of course. I'm sure the Netherlands doesn't have a come-one-come-all policy, do they?

The Dutch put up signs warning nonexistent criminals that the neighborhood is subject to a neighborhood watch program. It's for no purpose other than people like signs warning criminals to beware of the neighborhood watch.

They certainly did so when I saw a sex show in Amsterdam a few years back.
