I am as green as can be in terms of lawn care. I use these for the hedges and planty things:
I use this for the edging around the driveway and sidewalk:
And, this for the lawn;
The thing I can't seem to figure out -- is what did people use before the string trimmer/weed whacker device to get the long grasses that grow too close to the house for the mower to get them? Any ideas? Or, do I just have to go around the house with hand held clippers?

Strimmers replaced scythes.
I think people were a bit less anal about a bit of grass growing close to the house when they were fashionable.
Edit - The easiest method of keeping grass and weeds away from walls is to spray a narrow line of Roundup (or similar) along it.

Yeah - I could use liquid edger, but if you don't get it perfect you wind up with a visible brown strip around the house.
And, string trimmers replaced scythes for some things, but you can't use a scythe along the side of a house unless you want to scrape it along the cement or siding. I guess people just got down on their hands and knees and used a hand-held grass clipper. But, there must be a better manual device.

Machete-type blade, a "bush hook" works too.

Surely you can find long handled shears that would make quick work of cutting tall grass 'n weeds around the house.

Brown lawns aren't really worth caring for, anyway.

For use along the siding/outside wall of a house? Wouldn't that scrape?

You have to be smarter than the weeds.

LOL
My neighbor thinks I'm crazy -- but, I am done with my yard just as quickly as he is with his, and I never have to deal with oil, plugs and gasoline, and I'm never struggle with the pull starter trying to get the damn thing to work.

Yeah - I saw that on a google search, but it looks cumbersome. I may see if Home Depot has one and try one, since they let you return stuff you don't like. I think it would be easier to just use hand sheers and crawl along the side of the house.
