Nazi Science? Alternate History Thread...

Post by cronus » Sat Jun 08, 2013 11:26 am

Amazing strides with science under the Nazis where moral considerations stood down and the drive to achieve success was a doctrine. Would we have reached the moon sooner if Nazi science had continued? and would climate change be less of a problem with a smaller advanced industrial world consisting only of the Germans? The oil would not have been squandered under a National Socialist state but been the reserve of the German elite and it's administrative apparatus. Tourism would be for the elite and so diseases would spread less quickly. Only the arrival of a Nazi internet would have opened the gates to full squandering of the Earths finite resources? and that could have been mitigated by careful design?

Science without morals is religion.

They would have destroyed themselves with in-fighting trying to figure out what to do with the open rebellion in the vast wasteland they'd eventually conquered.

what were their great scientific achievements anyway? Discovery that a baby can't be born if the mother's legs are tied together?

Reminds me of an old Star Trek episode, except it was the Roman Empire instead of Nazis.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I'm not saying Nazi science or Nazi thinking was anymore or less perfect than the science or thinking we have today. However combining those abhorred ideologies of exclusivity and extermination the global human population would have peaked in the forties and returned to a sustainable level by now and so many issues that are now self evidently existentially critical would have been fortuitously avoided. And with no worries about risk averse lawyering men would have been made to go to Mars and the Moon.

The Nazi's were big on military engineering but not blue sky science. Hitler referred to quantum mechanics and relatively as a 'jewish science', which sort of makes producing nuclear weapons somewhat difficult. Biology especially genetics was never going anywhere due to the problem with nazi ideology

True, but it was Nazi scientists that put Neil Armstrong on the moon after all. Hitler could whinge about 'Jewish' science all he wanted, he still liked results. Also, the Germans were actually ahead of the allies in developing nuclear weapons for a while - some strategic sabotage performed by resistance groups (most notably in Norway when their heavy water supply was destroyed) set them back and the allies took the lead. In other fields, such as armored vehicles and aircraft design they were far ahead of the allies. Unfortunately, for them, the actual deployments of these advanced technologies came far too late in the war to make a difference and one wonders if they had invested more resources in production and less in R&D that the war would have had a different outcome. They probably would have still lost, but not unconditionally.

In your alternate 1953, the Nazis bombed the South pole with 100 multi megaton atom bombs at the same time in order to open a passage to the hollow earth where they thought the Atlantians were hiding, thereby accidentally catapulting Earth out of its sun orbit directly towards the Sun

Are you sure 100 would be enough?
