Future moral values

Post by mistermack » Thu Apr 11, 2013 2:57 pm

Our moral values have changed a lot, even in the last fifty years.
Divorce, abortion, gayness, civil rights, all sorts of things bear little resemblance to even the recent past.

What will be different in 100 years? What will they look back on, and consider us as barbarians for forbidding, or allowing?

Post your guesses.

I think eating meat will be one. In 100 years time, they will think we were unspeakable cannibals, for killing animals, and eating their flesh. And the age of consent will be 13. And sex with animals will be ok. And prisons will be obsolete. They will just have tags that stop you leaving the building.
Not stuff I would personally push for, but just my guess of what will happen.

Actually I don't think morality has changed all that much, it is just that people have generally become more tolerant and inclusive rather than prescriptive. I suspect the core rules of morality concerning harm to others and property will remain more or less the same.

Although we might all be Muslim as JSR says, in which case...

I think circumstances as much as accumulated experiences will always influence morals. Any lifestyle that involves a large carbon footprint might result in pariah status.

I wiped a laptop for a friend the other day, saving the photos and videos.

One of the home videos was a woman in her twenties casually talking to her MOTHER about anal sex, and how it didn't really turn her on, but she didn't mind it, as guys seemed to expect it these days.

My mother never mentioned the word sex once, to any of us.

My parents never mentioned sex either. If it wasn't for my brothers considerable stash of hidden porn mags which I stumbled on I could easily have ended up asexual like them. :coffee:

It depends who culture pins the blame on for being immoral. We might be bumping of those who have more than two children or setting fire to those who want peace. Morality is just a rationalisation for behaviour.

Rather than there being a more unified culture, there will be more divergence of culture. This is the trend of our day, and it shall continue. Moral values shall diverge as such as well. The attempts to force conformity though propaganda and 'education' will fail, and numerous micro societies shall flourish.

Morality changes massively never mind in 100 years , it can change in a generation. People will look back at us in a 100 years time as savages some of whom are more enlightened than others in the same way I look at back at 100 years earlier in the same way.

I think we are confusing morality with values, social norms and social change. The core of the prevailing morality are the rights and wrongs regarding our behaviour to others and their property and that's about it really. The context in which we exercise those changes ever more rapidly I agree.
