Mindful of self

Post by redunderthebed » Sat Sep 29, 2012 2:15 pm

As some of you might know i recently have being on a health kick cutting down on booze junk food exercising et al. Anyhoo its interesting i think for the first time in my life ive being mindful of myself i mean thinking about what i eat how much i drink what i drink etc. I find this astonishing and kinda sad because all these years ive being a thinker about everything else read extensively everything from fiction to marxist literature and watch documentaries and being a news and current affairs junkie and alot of it has made me think deeply about it and spent alot of time making sense and drawing conclusion and indeed my belief and moral system out of it.

I believe this is down to my depression and lack of self-esteem and in my darkest hours really being too chicken to kill myself not wanting to live either. I'm not beating myself up over i just think ive learnt that i have to be as mindful about my body and my health as i do about a doco i watched or a book ive read or a piece i listened to on the BBC world service its really a testament to my complete lack of self-worth i had for a very long time. Its not perfect yet nor will it ever be but im getting there i believe in that respect.

Sorry if it went too long i just thought i had to share this...

I'm glad you've made that realisation, red. You're definitely worth it, so if you've had a change in thinking that has allowed you to accept that taking care of yourself physically as well as mentally will improve the quality and quantity of your experience of life, then I'm very pleased for you. :flowers: :hugs:

You've made a good start, Red. Let's hope you eventually come to realise the damage you are doing to yourself by following those fake Mancunian scumbags as well. :tea:

I'm just coming out of a slump, red. Don't know why I keep falling into them. I learned long ago that exercising daily boosts self-esteem and quality of life, but I still find myself slacking off from time to time. Anyway, over the past week or so, I've been re-learning for the thousandth time that my daily happiness accumulates the more I exercise and slack off the booze. Hope you find the same thing and stick to it better than I have.

There is this program i have being doing called over the rainbow (yeah i know the name is crap my boss picked it :hehe: ) one of the things it teaches is that in the process of change that you will screw up and relapse but what you have to do is pick yourself up dust yourself off and get back on track. If possible put things in place that will make it less likely in the future that those things you tripped up on might not be a problem/less frequently a problem sounds simple, but so many people beat themselves up and give up on the path to change over one slip up so a reinforcement of that idea i think is needed personally and that idea has helped me heaps.

Slumps are inevitable its what you do after it that counts its a thing i've had to learn and still learning. After my grandmother died i got into a massive slump and i hit the bottle hard one fortnight out of the 14 days i got drunk on all of them. It leads to all sorts of financial shit that im just digging my way out of.

Good on you, mate, we all need to take a look at ourselves from time to time. I certainly need to work a bit harder against slipping into bad moods and mild depression...

If your spending your time "making sense", perhaps you aren't living. I have a similar illness; obsessive problem solving. But the life we live is irrational. It's about what I want and what I choose. A life spent solving other peoples' problems is way out of kilter. When I started taking irrational stands for what I want, life got better. Having to have reasons is death.

Here's to living life as more than a brain in a jar!

I'm working on getting out of my slump. Touch and go. Brushing with the danger of too many projects-- I'm wondering if others have experienced that particular bugaboo. So much to do that nothing gets done, and round and round...

Anyway, good luck. The OP sounds hopeful and purposeful. :flowers:

My wife suffers from depression. I try to help by chatting to her, and telling her how important she is to me, and how I love her. I also drag her out of the house regularly, and take her on long walks (sometimes kicking and screaming).

However, apart from that, it is tricky. I feel helpless a lot of the time. Want to help, but do not seem able to. Depression is a bummer, since depressed people usually know what they need to do (getting out to socialise, and getting out to exercise), but cannot bring themselves to do it.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.
