Getting other people to help you end your life.
This is prompted by this news story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19249680 about a guy with so called 'locked in syndrome' who went to our courts to seek to lift the ban on people assisting others to die. He wants doctors to help him without fear of prosecution. The courts said no, in effect sentencing him to a life of hell as he says.
Do you agree with the court or the guy?

Stupid judeo-xtian bullshit. We treat dogs better than people in this regard.
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Yeah, it's a serious empathy fail.
I was given a year of free milkshakes once. The year passed and I hadn’t bothered to get even one.

I'm not sure I follow. I have an idea. But to be sure, who is afraid and what are they are afraid of?

I've helped before. Only when I knew it was the right thing to do.

I think helping people end their life in these types of situations is the only humane thing to do.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away

And it's beautiful, that's life

It was the only think I could do. Not a happy thing, but a good thing.Twoflower wrote:I think helping people end their life in these types of situations is the only humane thing to do.

The first court or government to change the law will face huge resistance here in the UK from some doctors (probably a minority though), the churches and some on the right. They will have to be brave enough to withstand the onslaught which would be considerable.Sean Hayden wrote:I'm not sure I follow. I have an idea. I'm surprised to hear that Rum. I thought the recent study paid for by Richard Dawkins' foundation showed that most religious people in the UK are religious in name only.
edit: Christian religions anyway

We have a Christian Religion 'established' as part of the state structure don't forget. Bishops in in the Upper House can debate and vote on legislation. It is absurd - except weirdly their debates are often a lot more detailed and interesting than those in the Commons. They can't stop legislation passed by the House of Commons but they can delay it and disrupt it as they surely would with this issue.Sean Hayden wrote:I'm surprised to hear that Rum. Frustrating result .. I really feel for this man and his family
Audley .. ambivalent? Must say I'm somewhat surprised and perhaps a tad disappointed that you don't have a strong opinion on this ... Disappointed insofaras I generally appreciate reading your thoughts on a topic whenever you share them.

And there's the cultural/encultured influence in a society that survives and lingers ..Rum wrote:We have a Christian Religion 'established' as part of the state structure don't forget.
